Verve's Finest Hour collection of Nina Simone's work compiles 60 minutes of career highlights, including "Wild Is the Wind," "I Put a Spell on You," "Four Women," "I Loves You, Porgy," and "My Baby Just Cares for Me." Though it's by no means a definitive compilation of Simone's music, it does provide a welcome overview of her Verve years.

The common denominator that I found in hearing all these treasures was a certain elegance, soulfulness, and pride that left do doubt about her feelings regarding any song she was singing. On the other hand, she never resorted to the histrionics of other singers and both her pain and joy were tempered and best appreciated by listening very carefully to the way she uses silence as much as her voice to interpret any given song.

When Nina Simone released her first recordings for Bethlehem Records in 1958, she sounded strikingly accomplished both as a singer and a pianist, displaying the skill and the inspiration of a seasoned veteran. However, her Bethlehem sides only captured one aspect of her musical personality, and as even the most cursory examination of Simone's career makes clear, she was an artist who stubbornly refused to be pigeonholed. After Simone learned her first lesson about the vagaries of the music business when her deal with Bethlehem went sour, she signed with the Colpix label, where she recorded from 1959 to 1964, a time when jazz artists still made occasional appearances on the pop charts.

Even though Nina Simone’s career began at the start of the LP era, many of her recordings were also issued as singles, while others were only issued as singles. This 3-CD set compiles all of her 1957-62 singles, among them the perennial “I Loves You Porgy”, which charted at #2 in the UK and #18 in the USA in 1959, “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out” (#23 in the UK; #93 in the USA in 1960), and “Trouble in Mind” (#11 in the UK; #92 in the USA in 1961).This collection presents the incomparable Nina Simone in a variety of musical contexts, backed by her trio or quartet, or by big bands conducted by Bob Mersey or Ralph Burns, among others.
