Oscar Wilde describes his Salomé as containing “refrains whose recurring motifs make it so like a piece of music and bind it together as a ballad.” In his opera adaptation of Wilde’s play, the backbone of Richard Strauss’ opulent setting is a series of densely woven leitmotifs, which elaborate the relationship between Herodias’ daughter and the prophet Jochanaan.

This short but delectably sweet release is for most intents and purposes the soundtrack to the Frank Zappa concert film of the same name. Both were captured on location at New York City's Palladium (formerly the Academy of Music) in 1977, during the artist's brief yearly residency in the Big Apple in and around Halloween. By the time of these concerts, Zappa was embroiled in all manner of unpleasantness with Warner Bros. Records – a fact not lost to listeners as he comments upon their tumultuous relationship during some off the cuff dialogue with Terry Bozzio (percussion/vocals), as heard on "Titties and Beer."

The Beatles vs. Don Ho is a parody of the official album Vee Jay Records released in 1964 called The Beatles vs. The Four Seasons. The original comp is meant to he a "battle" between both artists and the liner notes are meant to help the listener find out who will be the champion. While Don Ho had more than enough music to fill up his own record or side of a record, the joke with The Beatles vs. Don Ho is that he only had one hit, known for only one song, thus is only represented by one song on this album, although the mix of "Tiny Bubbles" is done in a manner sounding more like "Revolution No. 9". The Beatles vs. Don Ho was put together by Melvin Records in 1979 and consists of audio from various sources, including promo records, live recordings, outtakes, radio and television interviews, and promotional radio spots.

The incipient incarnation of Atomic Rooster – with Vincent Crane (organ/vocals), Nick Graham (vocals/bass), and Carl Palmer (drums) – was together just long enough to document its debut, Atomic Roooster (1970) – (note: the extra O is intentional)…

The legendary Chicago pianist who moved to Paris in the early '60s didn't record much in the States afterwards, but this set, captured in 1967, finds him back in the U.S.A. supported by a sharp four-piece of blues and jazz veterans. The 20 tracks were originally released on two albums and have been in and out of print throughout the decades, so their appearance here on a single platter should be welcomed by Slim's many fans. It's a relaxed affair that shows a typically low-key Slim in splendid form aided by backing musicians who ease into the standard blues groove but can turn up the heat when needed.

's fetching, silky vocals are complemented by slick R&B production for a radio-ready mix. Unfortunately, the project taken as a whole is mostly gloss and little substance. serves as guitarist and programmer, and the light jazz flavor is like aural MSG: you finish the platter feeling hungry for...something.

This 45-minute live fragment captures the Soft Machine at the Paradiso Club in Amsterdam circa 1969. The second incarnation of the band included Hugh Hopper (guitar/bass/vocals), Mike Ratledge (keyboards), and Robert Wyatt (drums/vocals). The trio heard here had originally been joined by Kevin Ayres (guitar) on the group's major-label debut Volume One (1968). Not only did that leave the band minus a lead guitarist but a primary contributor to the material as well. The songs are derived from Volume Two (1969), which had been recorded but not yet issued when the Soft Machine set out on tour.

Aside from the Beatles and perhaps the Beach Boys, no mid-'60s rock group wrote melodies as gorgeous as those of the Zombies. Dominated by Colin Blunstone's breathy vocals, choral backup harmonies, and Rod Argent's shining jazz- and classical-influenced organ and piano, the band sounded utterly unique for their era…

At the heart of Courage: The Atlantic Recordings (2006) are the four out-of-print LPs that multi-instrumentalist Rufus Harley (bagpipes/flute/sax) cut for the label during the mid- to late 1960s. Also featured are a previously unissued cover of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" as well as "Pipin' the Blues," a Harley/Stitt duet from Sonny Stitt's Deuces Wild (1967) platter. Although criminally dismissed by many as a novelty, Harley successfully integrated the seemingly limited B flat and F drone of the bagpipes into the realm of (concurrently) modern jazz.

Believe it or not, Slade on Stage is the most intense recording Slade has ever made. That's heavy. This live album, recorded circa Till Deaf Do Us Part, shows the band playing faster, harder, and better than ever. Slade on Stage contains five of the band's new songs and four of their classic hits, along with an audience singalong to end the show…
