After winning The International Bluegrass Music Association’s 2018 Emerging Artist of the year Award, the Po’ Ramblin Boys came to Rounder Records for their third album Toil, Tears & Trouble, where they’ve made a diverse track list sound like The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys and no one else. The album boasts a fuller sound, thanks in part to engineering by Gary Paczosa (whose credits include Dolly Parton and Alison Krauss) as well as the addition of fiddler Laura Orshaw. Performances sparkle throughout the album’s twelve tracks, showcasing why the band has not only energized fans of the traditional bluegrass sound, but younger fans of progressive string band music as well.

It is uncertain, who initially had the idea to provide the Texan blues musician Albert Collins with trademarks all linked to ice: to call himself „The Iceman“ and to name one of his main recordings of the late-70s „Ice picking“. Already the music made by the young Collins, born 1932 in Leona/Texas, was praised to be especially „cool“; and of course, when he performed on the tiny stage of „Onkel Pö‘s Carnegie Hall“ on Eppendorfer Lehmweg in Hamburg, he was joined by his band called „The Icebreakers“. Naturally, on this winter evening no cold barrier needed to be overcome, certainly not in the overcrowded „Pö“, where most probably (as so often) tropical temperatures will have prevailed. The extremely incited and enthusiastic blues community of Hamburg turned the evening into a glittering party in honour of the guest from Texas.

His name adorned the star line-up at the Montreux Jazz Festival and at the Paleo-Festival in Nyon, just around the corner on Lake Geneva. It was also in Nyon that his terminal illness first broke out.

Manca qualcosa? Certo! le chitarre di ogni genere maneggiate con maestria da Pino e la sua inclonabile voce…

You could say Brian Langlinais’ new recording, Right Hand Road, was birthed by an ice storm, but that would be getting ahead of the story. Long before that weather event, the album’s roots ran from sea to sea along I-10, home to a slew of bars and nightclubs where bands earn gas money between major cities.
