The Raspberries

Although the Raspberries lasted merely three years during the early 1970s, in retrospect, they would have a distinctive lasting influence on other bands to follow, including Cheap Trick, The Knack, The Romantics and countless others. While they were ridiculed relentlessly at the time, it is doubtful that the power pop movement of the late 1970s would have developed as it did without them, with fans and accolades from the likes of Bruce Springsteen and John Lennon. These incredible performances capture the band at two junctures in 1973 and 1974, pushing two albums (Side 3 and Starting Over), both containing signature songs of Eric Carmen and Wally Bryson, but distinctly different with the latter bearing a more formidable and heavier approach. The two shows here highlight the power pop charms of the band, all delivered with a salivating bite of the berry. Timeline revisits two classic performances from The Raspberries’ iconic heyday with fully restored and professionally remastered original FM radio broadcasts.

Raspberries are a power pop/pop rock band from Cleveland, Ohio in the United States. They had a run of success in the early 1970s music scene with their crisp pop sound, which Allmusic later described as featuring "exquisitely crafted melodies and achingly gorgeous harmonies". Collection includes: Raspberries (1972), Fresh (1972), Side 3 (1973), Starting Over (1974).

This album demonstrates why the Raspberries remain the definitive power pop band. Early examples of this equally loved and misunderstood subgenre can be found on records by The Who, The Hollies and others, but from the moment the Raspberries burst out of radios in 1972, it was clear they had perfected the art of wedding power chords to pure pop melodies. Includes the band's biggest single, "Go All The Way".

"Boats Against the Current" is a 1977 album by Eric Carmen. The title is taken from a line in the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne ceaselessly into the past”. It was Carmen's second solo LP, after the Raspberries disbanded. It peaked at #45 on the Billboard album chart.

So You Are A Star: The Best Of The Hudson Brothers is a 1995 compilation CD by Oregon sibling trio The Hudson Brothers. The 20-song CD was released by Varese Sarabande.

American art-rock was often stilted and lacking in humor until new wave arrived. This ranks as one of the best debut albums from a rock band. The Cars are filed under rock, but they are closer to power pop than any other genre. Ric Ocasek sounded like a cross between the Raspberries and Television, punk sound with a pop attitude. Liberated by the influence of the Velvet Underground, Roxy Music and punk-era fellow travelers like Blondie and Suicide, the Cars methodically linked hookiness (enough to produce three hit singles and several other FM favorites from this debut album) and at least one raised eyebrow. The result still plays as a rock & roll classic. And if charm wasn't their aim, the fact is, it's undeniable. In 2003, the album was ranked number 282 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
