The Stranglers were among the very first punk bands, and like many others, had their roots in the UK pub band scene. In fact as a pub band their success was lacking atr best. But punk happened and they fit right in. It could be said they were punk before there was such a thing! Founded in Chiddingfold, England in 1974 by guitarist/vocalist Hugh Cornwell, bassist/vocalist Jean-Jacques Burnell, keyboardist Dave Greenfield and drummer Jet Black. Always dressed in black, playing with a heavy, dark, moody sound (oddly contrasted by Greenfield's often 'happy' organ sound) they were the progenitors of "goth-rock."

Feline is the seventh studio album by The Stranglers and was released in January 1983 (on the Epic record label in the United Kingdom). …Epic Records were certain this album would be a big success on the back of the much hyped single "Always The Sun" which Epic were sure would go 'top three', and early signs were good with the single receiving substantial radio airplay. However a lacklustre PR campaign led to its disappointing chart placing in the UK singles chart (#30). However it should be known that the UK album chart at this time still included compilation albums as well as studio albums, unlike today. In terms of today's charts Dreamtime would have appeared in or around the top 5. Still, the band felt that the album's commercial potential was never fulfilled, especially with regard to the lead single.

Isolationist, misanthropic, and cantankerous, punk survivors the Stranglers were never a band known for ostentatious displays of affection, at least not to music journalists. However, 1981's conceptual La Folie (roughly translated as "madness") has become known in band circles as the Stranglers "love" album. Typically, these were no ordinary chansons d'amour. Songs of faith, familial strife, devotion, and dependency–spanning religion, celebrity obsession, lust, death, and drugs–the nearest the album got to being superficially palatable was on the gorgeous, harpsichord-strewn "Golden Brown," ex-jail-bird Hugh Cornwell's paean to the seduction of heroin. And then there was the chilled-out title-track, six sultry minutes of J.J. Burnel reciting–entirely in French–the true story of a Paris-based student who murdered and ate his girlfriend.
