Like another Canadian group from the same era (Mashmakhan out of Montreal), Motherlode will forever be ensconced in that ignominious club known as the One-Hit Wonder, probably due to the fact they had to be one of the most fluid bands of that time, eventually encompassing some 19 different members in no less than five reincarnations over the years. Starting their careers primarily in Toronto, saxophonist/harmonica player Steve Kennedy and keyboardist William "Smitty" Smith both played in a band called The Soul Searchers which featured vocalists Eric Mercury and Diane Brooks.

In the summer of 2020 I had a solo piano concert tour in several mid-century temples. The atmosphere of these sacral spaces was unique. I felt inspired by the environment: by the acoustic sounding, the magnificent architecture, the congregations. A lot of new melodies came into my mind and I decided that like so many composers in the past I’m going to tell the story of Jesus with my own musical expressions, highlighting the segments that mean the most to me. I chose 12 parts of Jesus’s life and melodised them for solo piano. The duodenary number refers to the Twelve Tribes of Israel and Jesus’s 12 disciples who symbolise the importance of spreading his philosophy and teachings.

Bill Ives has enjoyed a rich and varied career as both performer and composer (Grayston Ives). These experiences, culminating in nearly two decades as Informator Choristarum (Director of Music) at Magdalen College, Oxford, are reflected in a compositional style which is complex yet accessible, rich and colourful. Franz Lehar was the most gifted and successful composer of operetta of the 20th century, and the most important composer of operetta after Johann Strauss Jr. His most famous work, The Merry Widow, may be the most recorded operetta in the world, and is in the repertory of numerous international opera companies; it has also been filmed several times, including three times in America – in 1924 (by Erich Von Stroheim), in 1934 with Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald, and in 1952 with Lana Turner and Fernando Lamas. The title waltz is sufficiently well known to middle-class American audiences to have figured as a key clue in the classic 1942 Hitchcock movie Shadow of a Doubt, set in a small California town. But he is also responsible for a half dozen other of the most beautiful operettas ever written.
