This album from PentaTone Classics is an excellent "highlight reel" of Russian opera hits of the Romantic era. This volume features the works of Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Tchaikovsky. Snippets of Mussorgsky's "Khovanschina" and "Borid Godunov", a portion of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Legend of the invisable city of Kitezh" and the second act of "Sadko", and a part of Tchaikovsky's opera derived from classic Russian literature "Eugene Onegin".

The Cenci (1951–52) is Havergal Brian’s operatic realisation of Shelley’s gruesome tale of incest and parricide in Renaissance Italy. The score calls it simply ‘Opera in Eight Scenes’, but it rarely goes in for grand tunes; instead, its dark colours reflect Shelley’s fascination with the struggle between good and evil. Stylistically, it is an unusual but highly effective hybrid: a music-drama focused on the intense delivery of Shelley’s text, with the declamatory style of the vocal lines echoing such recent oratorios as Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex and Honegger’s Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher, and the freewheeling orchestral writing producing something of a vocal symphony.

Following the success of The Dream of Gerontius in 1900 and The Apostles in 1903, the Birmingham Triennial Music Festival commissioned Elgar to produce another large oratorio for the 1906 festival. The Kingdom continues the narrative of the lives of Jesus’ disciples, depicting the community of the early church, Pentecost, and the events of the next few days. Although less frequently performed than The Dream of Gerontius, The Kingdom is considered one of Elgar’s greatest choral works, and deserves to rank alongside it. This re-release of the 1989 recording also features Sursum Corda and Sospiri, two short, reflective instrumental pieces, release honors the legacy of the late English conductor Sir Richard Hickox.

For Boston saxophonist Tucker Antell's debut recording, he looks to the rich tradition of the tenor sax/B3 Organ groups and his many influences and experiences with Jazz, Blues and groove-infused music he's spent the last decade performing across New England. His virtuosity on the tenor saxophone is undeniable, while his passion for this particular fusion of Jazz & Blues comes across in a fun and honest way: singable melodies, danceable grooves, and stretched, creative improvisations, with a few twists and turns along the way. From the churning shuffle groove of "Grime Scene," to the Cubist re-working of Monk's "I Mean You," or the unfurling slippery funk of "Madness," Antell's music strikes a fine balance between the head and the soul.

Jephtha (1751) was Handel's last oratorio. It does not have quite the dramatic sweep of Messiah or Israel in Egypt, but it contains many moments equal to anything in Handel. These include the choruses, several of which are among the most dramatically effective fugues ever composed. One attractive feature of this excellent recording of the oratorio under the directorship of Harry Christophers is that these choruses are crystal clear in texture, with all the words intelligible: hard enough for the soloists, who likewise won't have you turning to the booklet, and well-nigh remarkable for a chorus. Christophers' group the Sixteen consists of 18 members here, plus an orchestra of 30, so this is a fairly sizable performance by current standards.

Features the latest remastering. Includes a Japanese description, lyrics. Features original cover artwork. A legendary album from this tenor genius from Chicago – a hell of a player who emerged in the same generation as Clifford Jordan, John Gilmore, Eddie Harris, and Johnny Griffin – yet never fully got his due! The album's easily one of the most sharp-edged for the Bethlehem label – and has the power of a rare Blue Note or Prestige date from the same time – thanks partly to Harold's sharp bite in the tone of his tenor, and partly to an ultra-hip lineup that includes Charles Davis on baritone sax, Julian Priester on trombone, Phillip Wright on piano, Thomas Williams on bass, and Walter Perkins on drums.
