The Future Sound of London’s long and varied history stretches back almost 25 years and as such a vast amount of unrealised material exists in the FSOL Archives. Archived 8 brings together another 12 such tracks; in some cases these are completed but unreleased songs from that time, in others the songs have been reconstructed or enhanced and then further mixed to form the journey. This album is not just a collection of random off-cuts. It is a fully realised album, worthy of sitting alongside the rest of the band’s critically acclaimed work.

The Future Sound Of London's Translations takes their very essence, subverts it, turns it on it's head, twists and nurtures it. This is an album that makes a global journey of rare insight and beauty through the history of musical composition. Translations grew from the seminal 'Papua New Guinea' and is a transportive journey through the world of music and image, an album which is a stepping stone between their former works and their new incarnation.

The Pulse EPs gathers together some of the strongest tracks FSOL recorded before the release of Accelerator (1991). Originally pressed as four 12" EPs between 1991 and 1992, the record collects 16 pieces under the band's more well known aliases of Mental Cube, Indo Tribe, Yage and Smart Systems, plus the first ever Future Sound of London tracks (which, "Hardhead" in particular, are far removed from the layered, abstract work the name is most famous for). On that level, there is little here for those wanting another Lifeforms or Dead Cities, but any fans of Accelerator are urged to get ahold of this, and it works as a more singular and focussed effort than the similar Earthbeat compilation, which veers jarringly from vocal house to ambient breaks and acid house…

Everybody know that novelty bands have a hard time growing up, but the Presidents of the United States of America made a large leap toward that during their re-formation of 2000, with Freaked Out and Small demonstrating a decrease in their stylized silliness mellowed into something more genuine. It wasn't that the band rocked less, but their humor seemed less forced, a development that continued on 2004's Love Everybody. Evolution continues to be the name of the game on their 2008 follow-up These Are the Good Times People, as the group replaces departing guitarist (and founding member) Dave Dederer with Andrew McKeag, while they bring Seattle underground mainstay Kurt Bloch in as producer, all elements that help make These Are the Good Times People perhaps their most eclectic album to date.

Freaked Out and Small is the third album by The Presidents of the United States of America. It was released in 2000 by MusicBlitz Records, which was a web based label. An interesting note about this album is that all of the songs were played with normal guitars and bass guitars. This is different from all of the other albums by the band, as they usually played with guitbasses and basitars, which were guitars with fewer strings that were tuned differently than usual.

The Hot Club of San Francisco has never shied away from putting their own stamp on the Gypsy jazz sound created by Manouche guitar legend Django Reinhardt and French violin maestro Stephane Grappelli in 1930s Paris. Guitarist Paul "Pazzo" Mehling, a leading force in North America's Hot Club movement since it's inception in the late 1980s, has long made a point of featuring original tunes along with Reinhardt standards and imaginative Djangofied interpretations of songs by the likes of Lennon and McCartney. But the HCSF's 15th album, Original Gadjo, captures the creative ferment of the whole group, not just that of it's fearless leader. Slated for release Sept. 13, 2024, it's a project that finds the venerable combo revivified after a pandemic-induced hiatus, hitting on all creative cylinders. "From the beginning our mission statement was not just to preserve this music, but to pursue the intriguing question, 'What would Django do if he were still alive?'" Mehling says. "And after 35 years of chasing that sound, this album embraces our identities as gadjos, aka outsiders and Americans who were drawn to Django's sound but were not born to it."While the album features original tunes contributed by an impressive cast of current and former members of the HCSF, Mehling is still the quintet's defining compositional voice, with ebullient pieces like "Dainty" and "Praise D. Lloyd, " a churchy piece that will inspire many an "amen!" Some 35 years into the group's reign as the nation's longest-running Hot Club ensemble, the HCSF continues to expand the possibilities of Djangology.
