At this point, every Kendrick Lamar album is an event. When DAMN. hit the web a little early last night, there was an onslaught of tweeters jumping to call it another classic (and just a few haters) before it was even officially available anywhere. That’s not too surprising; DAMN. is one of the most immediate things Kendrick has ever done. Every song slaps you in the face on first listen. Kendrick’s delivery remains unparalleled by anyone in the game right now. The production is hot, the rhymes are hotter, and early listens already reveal a few lyrical mic drops. Still, as we’ve all probably learned by now, Kendrick albums take a long time to unpack. When I first heard To Pimp A Butterfly, the best album of 2015 and maybe the best album of this decade thus far, I was admittedly a little underwhelmed. Kendrick was progressing faster than I, as a listener, could keep up. So with that said, consider this less a review and more a collection of first impressions

Upon the release of their debut album, "Yourself or Someone Like You", in fall 1996, Matchbox Twenty was pigeonholed as one of the legions of post-grunge guitar bands that roamed the American pop scene in the middle of that decade. At no time did the record top the charts, but it was always around, a staple of modern rock, adult alternative, and Top 40 radio alike. Matchbox Twenty was omnipresent because they managed to blend the structure and sentiment of '70s arena rock with '90s hard rock, thereby winning a large audience by seeming simultaneously classicist and modern. They were a little more classicist than modern, but that's the reason why they became America's most popular rock band of the late '90s – even if nobody quite realized they had achieved that status. "The Matchbox Twenty Collection" is the full band's discography released as digital box set in 2013.

Prior to that, no soul label had its output as thoroughly documented as that set – there had been the Atlantic R&B box, which collected highlights, but it never attempted to capture the label's entire run – and while The Complete Stax-Volt Singles 1959-1968 missed a B-side or two, it was an exceptional piece of music history, and pretty damn entertaining to boot.

Bootsy Collins has rightfully received accolades as funk's second officer (after George Clinton – and it should be third after James Brown and Clinton).
