Two great poets, an inspired composer and two cycles of songs. Yiannis Ritsos and the Nobelist Giorgos Seferis, asked Mikis Theodorakis to write music on their poetry. The result was this beautiful album that remained forever in the musical history of Greece and the hearts of its people. The song "At the secret seashore" (Sto perigiali to krifo), at track 09, can earn the title of the most sung tune in Greece. In the first 12 songs, the singer is Grigoris Bithikotsis, while at the last 8 sings Mary Linda. Maybe the most popular album of Theodorakis.

Canto General, an oratorio for two voices, mixed choir and orchestra by Mikis Theodorakis based on poems from Canto General by Pablo Neruda was recorded live on August 13, 1975, at the Karaiskakis-Stadium, Pireus and on August 16, 1975, at the Panathinaikos-Stadium, Athens. The recording was performed by the artists that participated in the 1974 Paris première of the seven movements, that constituted the oratorio at that time. By 1981, Theodorakis had completed the oratorio to its now valid form in 13 movements…

Two internationally renowned musicians, Mikis Theodorakis from Greece and Zülfü Livaneli from Turkey, have – at a time of considerable political tension between their two countries – made a record together. Five compositions by each of the two artists were recorded in Instanbul and in Athens respectively. For 18 weeks this LP was top of the Turkish charts, and in September 1986, the 'Golden Record' was presented to Mikis Theodorakis personally in Istanbul.

Two early works of Mikis Theodorakis from 1961-1963 remastered in a new release of 2011. You will find scanned a nice 24p booklet with rare archive photos from the period of the original recordings. There are 20 songs and 2 instrumental pieces in total. Both works refer to the city of Athens. Theodorakis introduced a new young female singer, Ntora Yiannakopoulou, who sings 4 songs from "Beautiful City". Also, at track no 19, you will meet a legendary Greek-Gypsy songwriter and singer, Kostas Hatzis, excellent guitarist who made a brilliant career and continues to sing till today. Folk songs with main singer, the legendary Stelios Kazantzidis, a popular singer adored by all Greeks. With him, Haris Alexiou, also very popular. Recorded live at the Palast der Republik, East Berlin, on Febr. 14, 1980 as Radio DT 64 Youth Concert in occasion of the X. Festival of Political Song. I can't think of another recording with a similarly strong political statement in the history of music. It was staged during the Cold War in the Palast der Republik, merely 1 mile from the Berlin Wall that would divide the World into a communist and a capitalist hemisphere for another 10 years.
