Jeonju International Film Festival 2002 has selected 3 renowned cineastes in Asia. The three men are: director Moon, Seung-Wook from Korea, who gained international critical acclaim last year with his film. Director Wang Xiaoshuai from China, whose film was shown in last year's festivals, and who has, through his many films, become the representative artist of the Chinese 6th generation filmmakers. And lastly, Suwa Nobuhiro from Japan, who has already achieved the status of maestro of the 21st century films in Japan.

With a wicked sense of humor and a healthy streak of surrealism, a group of fearless directors - including eventual Oscar winners Miloš Forman and Ján Kadár - began to use film to speak out about the hypocrisy and absurdity of the Communist state. A defining work was the 1966 omnibus film Pearls of the Deep, which introduced five of the movement’s essential voices: Věra Chytilová, Jaromil Jireš, Jiří Menzel, Jan Němec, and Evald Schorm. This series presents that title, along with five other crucial works that followed close on its heels, one from each of those filmmakers - some dazzlingly experimental, some arrestingly realistic, all singular expressions from a remarkable time and place.

In Roman Polanski's adaptation of Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Nastassja Kinski plays Tess, a poor British… peasant girl sent to live with her distant and wealthy relatives, the D'Urbervilles. Though Tess' father had hoped that the girl would be permitted a portion of the D'Urberville riches, he is in for a major disappointment: Tess' new housemates are not D'Urbervilles at all, but a social-climbing family that has bought the name. Tess won three Oscars, including a Best Cinematography statuette for the late Geoffrey Unsworth and his successor Ghislain Cloquet. The film also served to catapult Nastassja Kinski to stardom.

Lucía is a waitress who lives and works in Madrid. After what she believes to be the loss of her boyfriend, tortured writer Lorenzo, she flees to a secluded island that he had often told her about. There she meets Carlos and Elena, who have also run away to the island to escape personal tragedy. Unbeknownst to them, all have connections to Lorenzo. Elena met him many years ago on the island and enjoyed beautiful, anonymous love-making with him in the sea by the light of a full-moon. 9 months later, Elena gave birth to Luna, but never managed to find Lorenzo. Carlos was the step-father of Belén, who disappeared after she unwittingly caused the death of Luna. As she hears more about the past of her two new housemates, Lucía is reminded of the book Lorenzo was writing, a tale about a journey into a dark, deep past that brought on his depression. Soon, the lines between fact and fiction begin to fall apart.

Film opens on December 18, 1999, just a few days before the dawn of the new century. A local reporter, Iron Idem, announces that the Martians have landed. Shortly after that his program loses its independence: he is given the script telling the crowds how to welcome the invaders. Then the chaos breaks out: the Martians and police mistreat the populace; things become violent. Idem's own wife is kidnapped and it seems somebody is trying to reduce his effectiveness as a reporter. Idem decides to fight back: he illegally broadcasts a message during the rock concert, but nobody believes him anymore.
