Something/Anything? is the third album by American musician Todd Rundgren, released in February 1972. It was Rundgren's first album released under his own name, following two records credited to the quasi-group project Runt, and was also his first double album. It was recorded in late 1971 in Los Angeles, New York City and Bearsville Studios, Woodstock. The album is divided into four sections focused on different stylistic themes; the first three parts were recorded in the studio with Rundgren playing all instruments and singing all vocals in addition to producing. The final quarter contained a number of tracks recorded live in the studio without any overdubs, save for a short snippet of archive recordings from the 1960s.

Every Todd Rundgren album seems to have a gimmick, and on this one, which inaugurates his recording relationship with the Forward subsidiary of Rhino Records, the trick is that he recorded almost four hours of musical fragments of four to eight seconds each and put them on an interactive CD so that they could be combined in a nearly infinite number of ways. If you have a CD-I, that is. If you only have a regular old CD player, this non-interactive version presents 10 songs and six variations on them. Rundgren has added rap to his arsenal, his lyrics are more political, and many of the tracks seem aimed at the dance floor. Sounds like music designed to fall through the cracks, right? Rundgren fans will be put off, while the new jack swingers won't bother to listen. But the real problem is that it's just not very good. (By the way, with this release Rundgren anticipated Prince's decision to rename himself in a weird way: he officially became "TR-I," for "Todd Rundgren-Interactive.") (On June 7, 1993, Forward released No World Order–"Lite," an alternate version of the album's 10 tracks, through mail order at a midline price.)

old on because this can get confusing. In 1997, Todd Rundgren released an album called With a Twist, where our hero decided rework a bunch of his favorites in the bossa nova style so popular with the hipsters in the waning days of the great mid-'90s lounge revival.

Todd Rundgren's best-known songs – the Carole King pastiche "I Saw the Light," the ballads "Hello, It's Me" and "Can We Still Be Friends," and the goofy novelty "Bang on the Drum All Day" – suggest that he is a talented pop craftsman, but nothing more than that. On one level, that perception is true since he is undoubtedly a gifted pop songwriter, but at his core, Rundgren is a rock & roll maverick. Once he had a taste of success with his 1972 masterwork Something/Anything?, he chose to abandon stardom and, with it, conventional pop music.

Todd Rundgren 70's Collection offers 117 tracks digitally remastered in 96 kHz, 24bit. Todd Rundgren may be known as an overindulgent pop singer and producer – but he's also got a fantastic talent for a good little pop song, and his 70s albums are littered with gems that often get lost amidst the shuffle of more overblown numbers. This collection includes following albums: Runt (1970), Runt: The Ballad Of Todd Rundgren (1971), Something/Anything? (1972), A Wizard, A True Star (1973), Todd (1974), Initiation (1975), Faithful (1976), Hermit Of Mink Hollow (1978).

Todd Rundgren considered 1966 the beginning of his professional musical career, largely because the Nazz formed around that time. As a celebration, he recorded Faithful. Presumably, Faithful celebrates the past and the future by juxtaposing a side of original pop material with a side of covers. Actually, "covers" isn't accurate – the six oldies that comprise the entirety of side one are re-creations, with Rundgren "faithfully" replicating the sound and feel of the Yardbirds ("Happenings Ten Years Time Ago"), Bob Dylan ("Most Likely You Go Your Way and I'll Go Mine"), Jimi Hendrix ("If Six Was Nine"), the Beach Boys ("Good Vibrations") and the Beatles "("Rain," "Strawberry Fields Forever"). All of this is entertaining, to a certain extent, especially since it's remarkable how close Rundgren comes to duplicating the very feel of the originals.
