Having completed his years-long traversal through the vocal music of Johann Sebastian Bach for Challenge Classics, Ton Koopman picks up the thread with a valuable new series surveying the complete works of Bach's Danish predecessor Dietrich Buxtehude. While Buxtehude's total output for organ has already been surveyed, albeit infrequently, on record, there are still many works falling outside that genre that have never been committed to vinyl or disc, so this is potentially a highly valuable project.

Previously begun on Erato, Koopman's cantata cycle was taken over and completed in 2007 on Challenge Classics. It now looks set to surpass the famous Leonhardt-Harnoncourt set on Teldec (and indeed most of his other competitors). Koopman favours an intimate approach to the choruses - namely one voice to a part. Also, he opts for females soloists rather than boys, as would have been the case in Bach's day, and he favours mixed rather than solely male choirs. For many this will be a plus point, and it is good news for fans of Barbara Schlick. He goes for slightly higher than normal pitch - a semi-tone above present day pitch, which, as Christopher Wolff's notes point out, is what Bach used in Mühlhausen and Weimar, brightening the sonority quite a lot. The singing in virtually all the cantatas is pretty impressive and the instrumental playing is of a very high order.

Bach’s St. John Passion with a star-studded lineup of soprano Johennette Zomer, countertenor Andreas Scholl, tenor MLike Koopman's reading of the St Matthew Passion last year, this is an intimate, if occasionally idiosyncratic, account. His understanding and shaping of the structure of the work produce powerful results, while an intuitive sense of pacing means the more contemplative sections serve to heighten the main dramatic narrative, rather than interrupt it. Koopman also achieves a sensitive balance between voices and instruments, so that the solo singers become very much part of the contrapuntal texture, and the instrumental parts are given due focus.

Say what you will about Ton Koopman's many Bach recordings, you have to admit his few Buxtehude recordings are something special. For some, Koopman's Bach, for all its deep devotion and immense musicality, was still a bit too individualistic, but Koopman's Buxtehude, while matching his Bach for devotion and musicality, was appropriately quirky and eccentric.

Veteran Dutch historical-performance specialist Ton Koopman has set himself the task in his seventh decade of recording the complete compositional output of Dietrich Buxtehude. He was, in fact, elected president of the International Dietrich Buxtehude Society. Some of these recordings have been of keyboard works, but Koopman, here and elsewhere, has also led small-ensemble works from the keyboard, covering an almost completely unknown repertoire. Here he offers a set of eight unpublished sonatas for from one to three stringed instruments – not only violin and viola da gamba, but also the older violone – and basso continuo.

A transformative force in historically informed performance, Ton Koopman is renowned as a conductor, harpsichordist and organist. In 1979, aged 35, he founded the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra in the city where he had studied with the great Dutch harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt. La Resurrezione, composed in Rome in 1708, was Handel’s first oratorio on a sacred theme. The soloists take the roles of an Angel, Mary Magdalene, Mary Cleophas, St John and Lucifer, who are portrayed in vivid operatic terms with the help of a lavishly-scored orchestra. The distinguished Dutch keyboard-player and conductor Ton Koopman (b.1944) founded the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra in 1979. The group consists of internationally renowned baroque specialists. Conductor and orchestra are joined here by singers acknowledged as leading specialists in the baroque repertoire.

The cantatas of volume 19 can be relegated to three groups: Four works (BWV 72, 88, 129 and 193) belong to the third Leipzig series, lasting from 1725 to 1727; five (BWV 145, 159, 171, 174 and 188) belong to the group known as the Picander cycle of 1728-29, which was not completed or has not survived complete; two works (BWV 51 and 117) belong to the period after 1730, in which Bach composed new church cantatas only sporadically.
