In November 2016, I had the rare privilege of performing my original material with a live band, at a concert for a select audience at Cape Town's iconic Milestone Studios. The band, MeaCulpa, comprising of Jose Jordaan and Murray Anderson on guitars, Roger Lloyd on drums, and Brian Lloyd on bass and some vocals, paid extraordinary attention to detail on my tracks, and added an energy to the pieces that only a live band can. The recordings are authentically live, mistakes and all, and there was no post-production fixing or editing, save the brilliant mixing by the studio's in house engineer at the time, Jethro Harris.

Momma Don't Allow is a celebration by Tony Richardson and Karel Reisz of the free spirit of youth - particularly London's working class youth. The story was contrived to contrast the difference between 'Teddy Boys' and 'Toffs', with the sub-plot being that the 'Teds' were not the flick-knife wielding thugs they were made out to be in the press. The focus of the film is Wood Green jazz-club where Chris Barber, the maestro of 'trad' or 'stomp' jazz, is playing. In the mid-fifties trad jazz was the risqué underground sound of rebellion. Richardson and Reisz used it and its dive-bar image to drive the film along as the Teds see-off the late arrival of the Toffs by being better at socializing, drinking and dancing. The film was paid for by the BFI Experimental Film Fund and according the BFI records cost £425. Momma Don't Allow was Richardson's and Reisz's first contribution to the 'Free Cinema' movement.

First shown in 1956, O Dreamland is a low budget 'solo' by Lindsay Anderson about a fun fair. It's the type of pop-culture subject that almost anyone can make a little film about. But Anderson turns Margate's gimcrack, fake world of scary Dreamland into a metaphor for the shabbiness of modern life. Rather than appearing frightened, Anderson's characters are caught off-guard, sheep-like and bewildered, assaulted by a barrage of coarse images of death and frivolity.

File under "Yes." When this version of the band couldn't obtain rights to the name, they put their album out under their combined names, but it's still Yes by any other name. Jon Anderson's tenor wails through spacy lyrics, Rick Wakeman constructs cathedrals of synthesized sound, Steve Howe rips high-pitched guitar leads, and Bill Bruford makes his drums sound like timpani…

Laurie Anderson's third proper studio album, coming over five years after 1984's Mister Heartbreak (1986's Home of the Brave was a film soundtrack), is a near-total departure from anything she had done before or, indeed, anything she did after. The most purely musical of Anderson's albums and the one on which she does the most actual singing (though her trademark deadpan spoken-word passages are still present and accounted for), Strange Angels seems to be Anderson's idea of a straightforward pop album.

Thank you Voiceprint for finally re-releasing this fantastic live film on DVD. The live CD album of this show has long been a favourite of mine and here I have the complete show in both audio and video. For those of you who don't know, Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe it is the band that really deserved to be called Yes in the 80's, much more so than the line-up that owned the rights to that name during that time.
