Aside from being an excellent album musically, this is a very important record in the overall scope of things: first, it was the record that brought Ricky Skaggs to the forefront as a “new traditionalist” in country music—with it he began a series of albums that not only brought a more traditional sound to country music (which was getting pretty watered down in the late 1970s), but also brought an appreciation & respect for Bluegrass music to Nashville. Second, it brought significant attention to the new Sugar Hill label, which soon established itself as one of the leading two or three Bluegrass oriented labels in the country. Skaggs genius was to take hard-core traditional songs and give them a good dose of contemporary styling, without selling out or watering the music down.

Hell on Church Street, Punch Brothers’ newest album, is the band’s reimagining of, and homage to, the late bluegrass great Tony Rice’s landmark solo album Church Street Blues. The record features a collection of songs by Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Bill Monroe, and others. Recorded at Nashville’s Blackbird Studio in November 2020, during a time of great uncertainty, Hell on Church Street was intended as both its own work of art and a gift to Rice, who died that Christmas. Punch Brothers said of Tony Rice and Church Street Blues: “No record (or musician) has had a greater impact on us, and we felt compelled to cover it in its entirety, with the objective of interacting with it in the same spirit of respect-fueled adventure that Tony brought to each of its pre-existing songs.”

David Grisman has had so many outstanding bands and individual players that it is hard to mourn the departure of any one musician, as his replacement inevitably reveals special skills of his own. But it is hard to be the mandolinist's early quintet with guitarist Tony Rice, violinist Darol Anger, mandolinist Mike Marshall, and bassist Todd Phillips. Each of the four men left to lead their own groups, though the band reunited in 2001 for a 25th anniversary concert in Tacoma, Washington.
