t's tempting to hear Kamasi Washington's six-track Harmony of Difference suite as a follow-up to his sprawling, justifiably acclaimed three-hour debut The Epic. But this EP, at just over half-an-hour, is, in many ways, a standalone work. It was performed in New York at The Whitney Biennial as part of a show that included a film by director A.G. Rojas and paintings by Washington's sister Amani. According to the artist, it was composed to explore "the philosophical possibilities of the musical technique known as 'counterpoint.'" Washington defines it as "the art of balancing similarity and difference to create harmony between separate melodies." That description is, at least in this setting, akin to metaphor in the current socio-political-cultural era where flash point battles over issues of race, gender, sexual orientation, and cultural appropriation are being waged afresh.

The only label financed from the proceeds of bagging groceries, Renfro Records operated at the fringe of the Los Angeles music business. “There was so much talent around in those days,” founder Anthony Renfro said. “Everyone could sing and they were literally singing on the street corners. Twenty dollars for drink or weed would get them into a studio at the click of the fingers.” Those clicks resulted in heavenly northern soul sides from Morris Chestnut, The Attractions, and Carl Henderson, alongside dreamy girl group pop from The Sequins, The Stunners, and Tender Loving Care. The label’s ten-year run is captured in its near-entirety across three virtual “discs,” sorted by tempo for talcum enthusiasts and steppers alike.

One couldn't imagine a better opening number for the radio program The Doris Day Show than "It's Magic," for each week between March 1952 and May 1953, the versatile song stylist and beloved motion picture star cast a spell over listeners worldwide with an intimate gathering of famous friends filled with music and laughter. Over the course of five dozen broadcasts of The Doris Day Show–recorded in Hollywood in front of a live audience and happily preserved on 16-inch transcription discs–Doris joined her special guests at the piano for performances of songs she often had never commercially recorded. This is a largely unknown and scarcely documented facet of Doris' career, and Day Time on the Radio brings to light no less than 32 rarities including 27 duets and five solo performances. Among her notable foils are frequent leading man Gordon MacRae, who starred in five pictures with Doris; here the two of them sing a total of four duets, highlighted by their medley of "Cuddle Up a Little Closer"/"Till We Meet Again."
