In 1983, Roland followed the massively influential TR-808 with the TR-909. Only around 10,000 were made, but the influence of this machine is heard, and felt, to this very day. Digital samples of “real drums” had become fashionable, but these sounds were not tweakable and, let’s be honest, still didn’t sound like real drums.

In 1980, the Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer was released to an unsuspecting and somewhat bewildered public. To many at the time, its tweakable analog tones didn’t exactly deliver “traditional” or "realistic" drum sounds. It wasn’t until after a few adventurous musicians and producers got their hands on the TR-808 and started tweaking those knobs that the world would feel the impact it would leave on music forever.

TR-909 is a virtual analog Roland 909 drum machine emulation.

Many musicians call the Roland TR-808 drumcomputer affectionately the bass queen and this pseudonym is without any doubt a warrantable expression. After its release in 1980 it first became a slow seller and people preferred the more natural and powerful sounding Linn-L1 instead of the rather artificial chinking Roland machine.
