This is the reorchestrated, German-language version of Handel's ''Acis and Galatea,'' done in 1788 for Baron von Swieten, a music patron who had fallen in love with Baroque music. In its original form, in English and lightly scored, Handel's delectable work has long been a concert and theater staple. However, Mozart's expertly crafted revision adds a bassoon as well as pairs of flutes, clarinets and horns, which adds to the orchestra's sonority and palette of colors but also subtly changes the character of the music.

When we embarked on the Bach Cantata Pilgrimage in Weimar on Christmas Day 1999 we had no real sense of how the project would turn out. There were no precedents, no earlier attempts to perform all Bach’s surviving church cantatas on the appointed feast day and all within a single year, for us to draw on or to guide us. Just as in planning to scale a mountain or cross and ocean, you can make meticulous provision, calculate your route and get all the equipment in order, in the end you have to deal with whatever the elements - both human and physical - throw at you at any given moment. For those who are not familiar with the Bach Collegium Japan, it is an orchestra and choir founded in 1990 by their director and keyboard player Masaaki Suzuki. The orchestra is renowned as Japan’s leading period instrument players applying their historically informed knowledge of sacred baroque music and specialising in the work of J.S. Bach. The chosen venue for Suzuki’s cycle of recordings has been the Shoin Women’s University Chapel in Kobe, Japan.
Suzuki really is a master of his art directing impeccable vocal and instrumental performances.

The Bach-Gesellschaft began publishing Bach's works in 1851 with a volume that started with BWV 1, the cantata Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern, BWV 1. It completed publication in 1900 with its forty-sixth volume. The volumes varied somewhat in editorial quality and accuracy; Britannica both lauds the editing of Wilhelm Rust for the edition and notes a deterioration of standards after his death, including a volume in which "the bass and violin are a bar apart for a whole line" (apparently a reference to sloppy editing). Nevertheless, the Bach-Gesellschaft's volumes were a groundbreaking achievement and contributed greatly to the study and appreciation of Bach's music. They remained the standard edition of Bach's complete works until the publication of the Neue Bach-Ausgabe, begun in 1954 and published by Bärenreiter.

Set along the southern coast of Vietnam during the French occupation in the 1940s, water is everywhere, giving life and bringing decay and rot. Kim is 15; his father and step-mother have two buffalo, their lifeline as subsistence rice farmers. During the rainy season, there's no grass and the buffalo are starving. Kim volunteers to take the beasts inland to find food. On this coming-of-age journey, Kim sees men mistreat women, men fight with men, and French taxes rob the poor. He works for Lap, a buffalo herder whose past is entangled with Kim's parents, and he makes friends who will lead him to his place in the world.
