To be there was to witness Kraftwerk in the context of the black dance music they had inspired and were inspired by.\nThe performance was a timely reboot for the band. Their last original album – the lacklustre Electric Café – was released in 1986, when early jack, house and techno was leaving Kraftwerk behind.

On May 24th 1997, Kraftwerk, legendary German masters of electronica and some of the most influential progenitors of electronic music ever, played a long-awaited live gig at Britain's Tribal Gathering dance music festival, the largest legal dance gathering in the country, composed of a number of huge tents holding up to 10,000 people each in a field at Luton Hoo.

Compiled by Luca Fiore and Glossy Mario, the album takes listeners on a rhythmic journey through the diverse sounds of Europe from 1979 to 1990. This collaboration between two like-minded labels highlights forgotten recordings from across Europe, including works by artists from France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Austria, the Netherlands… Opening with the ethereal “Rainforest” by British female duo Ova, this collection weaves together nine tracks from artists who were deeply influenced by global percussion traditions. With hints of jazz, new age, gamelan, and West African rhythms, these tracks feature instruments like congas, tablas, and shekeres, and reflect a shared fascination with the organic beat of the drum.

Classically-based readers will know the Pearl label for its historical remasterings, but it has a short list of black American music, to which it has now added some extraordinary West African tapes from the 1940s. A two-person American team made these TRIBAL, FOLK AND CAFÉ recordings, visiting city and country and powering their tape machine from the jeep engine for out-of-the-way villages. The result is a unique record of times when everybody still knew the songs and traditional instruments were easy to find. The brilliance lies in the selection of short extracts to make at least one CD packed with real musical communication. The notes pick out sources of familiar Cuban ingredients, and there are pieces with kora and guitars from Guinea that point towards Baaba Maal. Much of the second CD is taken up with songs and choruses like Americanised music hall, some featuring a clapped-out piano. But the rest is riveting and needs at the least to be in every educational collection.

This album has proven to be a favorite of martial artists, ballet instructors and choreographers everywhere. Below is a collection of Tribal Rhythms. They are traditional rhythms used in lot of Arabic music. The rhythms are used with tabla and dumbek as well as other drums. I took live recordings and translated them to MIDI patterns.
