Franz Schubert (1792–1828) only ever completed one string trio, his Trio in B flat D581 (1817). The writing is clearly inspired by the works of Mozart, not from a great trio like the Divertimento KV563, but from easier and made-for-piano genres like the violin sonatas. The cello, in fact, still remains in the orbit of the basso continuo, while the viola accompanies the main theme with formulas similar to the Alberti bass. Schubert's spark, however, is present in this minor work, for example in his way of dilating time at the beginning of the development with a phrasing that stretches, with simplicity, to infinity. The writing reveals a glimmer of the orchestral sound of the great chamber works of the last period, but nevertheless it remains linked to the elegant style of the late 18th century.

With excerpts from their new CD "In the shadow", the Trio Adorno presents compositions that have hitherto not been sufficiently in the limelight of European chamber music salons. After the fresh and festive C major Trio by Joseph Haydn, the Trio Adorno's insider tip sounds: Martinu's last piano trio. His piano trios are hardly known, performed, published or even recorded on sound carriers, even in chamber music circles, despite their tonally magical variety of colours. Probably also, since the exiled Czech is always in the shadow of his two Compatriots Smetana and Dvořaks stood. The Adornos devote themselves to the latter with his Piano Trio in G minor, an enchanting work which, in turn, would also be much better known if it didn't suffer from the top dog Dumky Trio, which affects perception clearly dominated by Dvorak's piano trio oeuvre.

Russian Roots is the Trio Gaspard's debut recording for Chandos records, for which they are joined by soprano Katharina Konradi for a diverse and rewarding program that explores the Russian influence across almost 200 years of music. A selection of Russian folksongs set by Beethoven, Shostakovich's first Piano Trio, his Seven Romances on poems by Blok and Weinberg's Jewish Songs form the backbone of the recital. These are interspersed with Vocalises (wordless songs) by Stravinsky, Rachmaninoff, Gubaidulina and Auerbach.

The first time you listen to this disc you will undoubtedly be transported directly back to your childhood. Charles Schulz's Peanuts characters will go toe-tapping and funky-dancing through your mind's eye. Play it a few more times, though (ignoring the dialogue snippets, if you can), and you will begin to truly revel in Guaraldi's wonderful, humorous, deep piano playing. You'll hear why he's such an influence on new age ivory tickler George Winston, but you'll also realize that Winston's holiday music never quite sparkles with the underlying passion, and humor, that twinkles in these grooves. Buy it for the nostalgia–keep it because it will remain one of the most enchanting albums in your holiday collection.
