To call this CD (a reissue of a Pablo date) an all-star session would be an understatement. Joining pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarist Joe Pass, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Bobby Durham are three classic trumpeters: Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, and Freddie Hubbard. They clearly inspire each other (Gillespie flew in from the East Coast specifically for this date) and the music ("Daahoud," "Just Friends," the new blues "Chicken Wings," and a torrid version of "The Champ") has plenty of exciting moments.

'Carl Saunders, Jazz Trumpet' is a blend of Jazz standards, American songbook standards and originals which could be referred to as future 'New Jazz Standards' featuring the great and legendary Joe Labarbera on drums, the great and legendary bassist Chuck Berghofer and the young, new and brilliant pianist Josh Nelson. Carl Saunders is widely recognized as one of the greatest jazz trumpet players in the world but it often surprises people to find that he is also a prolific composer who has written hundreds of original compositions. Saunders began as a young man in 1961-62 on the road with Stan Kenton.

Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington the most important artists in the history of jazz and the two most influential American musicians of the 20th Century. In April, 1961, these two giants got togethr in a New York studio for their only encounter. Louis brought his trumpet, voice and the all-stars with Trummy Young and Barney Bigard. Duke brought his pianistic talents and a considerable canon of great compositions. The magic that transpired over one night and the following afternoon was an historic simgularity. This disc contains all 17 master takes that made during those magical sessions, newly remixed from the original tapes with 24-bit/96kHz mastering for maximum fidelity.

Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington were (and are) two of the main stems of jazz. Any way you look at it, just about everything that's ever happened in this music leads directly – or indirectly – back to them. Both men were born on the cusp of the 19th and 20th centuries, and each became established as a leader during the middle '20s. Although their paths had crossed from time to time over the years, nobody in the entertainment industry had ever managed to get Armstrong and Ellington into a recording studio to make an album together. On April 3, 1961, producer Bob Thiele achieved what should be regarded as one of his greatest accomplishments; he organized and supervised a seven-and-a-half-hour session at RCA Victor's Studio One on East 24th Street in Manhattan, using a sextet combining Duke Ellington with Louis Armstrong & His All-Stars.

This strong set documents the continuing and developing ties between Alexander and Harold Mabern; as the saxophonist unleashes his full-bodied, Coltrane-like tone on a set of originals and unlikely standards, Mabern's restless support unifies and galvanizes the rhythm section. At times, the pianist is a little too busy; there are passages in, for example, "There but for the Grace of…" where he might have laid out for a while, especially to give air to the segue between solos by Alexander and guest trumpeter Nicholas Payton. And repetitious left-hand comps during his solos nearly derail the band's sprightly 3/4 rendition of "A House Is Not a Home" and the choruses in the blazing "Something's Got to Give." Still, almost every detail throughout the rest of the album fits into a pattern of potent swing, even at the difficult medium-slow tempo taken on "This Girl's in Love With You" (the only track on the album that showcases the saxophonist exclusively as a soloist). Consistently assured improvisations from both Alexander and Payton provide the final touch necessary for the success of this session.

Album CD published in 1990 remastering the original recording on vinyl from live performance at the festival in Montreux (Switzerland), 1975. The sextet composed of the great trumpeters Roy Eldridge (Pennsylvania, 1911-1989), Dizzy Gillespie (South Carolina, 1917-1993) and Clark Terry (Missouri, 1920), supporting the album title, with the great pianist Oscar Peterson (Canada, 1925-2007), the bass Niels Pedersen (Denmark, 1946-2005) and Louis Bellson (Illinois, 1924-2009) with drums, was the summit of the proceedings of that year in Montreux, produced by Norman Granz, which achieved a historical record very suitable for the live show. The CD provides as 'bonus' track 'Lullaby of the leaves', which was not included on the original vinyl.
