An original-art 1' x 2' tour poster designed exclusively for these sets by Dennis Loren (who created album covers, concert posters, and print ads for Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Paul McCartney, The Velvet Underground, Rick James and many others) comes in each box, as does a luxurious LP-sized 28-page booklet featuring extensive liner notes by Richie Unterberger, rare photos, memorabilia and a reproduction of the original LP artwork in 12 inch; format. For sound, look and luxury, these sets have it all…so have at it! It must have been a blast (not just a blast from the past) for the designers at Culture Factory USA to work on these new Jefferson Airplane reissues. Not only are these seminal albums of the psychedelic era, but these painstaking reproductions celebrate the band s groundbreaking graphics and feats in elaborately configured packaging.

Louis Sclavis’s 13th ECM recording finds the French clarinetist drawing inspiration from two sources – the street art of Ernest Pignon-Ernest, and the interpretive originality of a splendid new quartet. Pignon-Ernest’s works were previously the subject of Sclavis’s highly acclaimed 2002 recording Napoli’s Walls. This time Sclavis looks at a broader range of the artist’s in situ collages from Ramallah to Rome, in search of “a dynamic, a movement that will give birth to a rhythm, an emotion, a song.”

Jettisoning not only the funk-metal rhythms of their earlier work but also long-time guitar hero and wacky eyewear model James B Martin, King For A Day… Fool For A Lifetime for the most part pursued a more back-to-basics garage sound that slotted in with the post-grunge environment of 1995. The album holds up well today, with Mike Patton achieving new heights of visceral howling on the likes of Cuckoo For Caca, but among the bonus tracks there's little to get excited about other than the tragic-comedy Bee Gees cover - I Started A Joke.
