Ultra Lounge

Ultra-Lounge is a series of compilation CDs released by Capitol Records, featuring music predominantly from the 1950s and 1960s in genres such as exotica, space age pop, mambo, television theme songs, and lounge. Many of the volumes have since been made available for purchase via digital download. Each CD featured detailed liner notes along with two related drink recipes, tips on how to serve drinks to guests, and often photographs of sculptures made out of bartender items and other objects.

It has been 25 years since the first Café del Mar Volume was released. To celebrate this milestone we have carefully selected a mix of classics & brand new tracks to reflect the essence of Café del Mar. The double CD release features brand new tracks & remixes by Quantic, The Cinematic Orchestra, Zero 7, Peggu Gou, BadBadNotGood and timeless classics by Chicane, A Man Called Adam, Trio Mocoto, Planet Funk, just to name but a few.

Smooth New York jazz rappers Fun Lovin' Criminals have quietly built their popularity stateside and particularly in Europe over the last six years by wrapping their tales of the Big Apple's underbelly with sweet grooves and live instrumentation akin to Cake, the Roots, and Luscious Jackson. The smoothness of their grooves and underground culture has always been just a stone's throw away from lounge-lizard heaven. With Mimosa, the band gives in to their Velveeta-smooth cheese urges and delivers a quirky collection of far-out covers and retoolings of their own songs.

John Lurie's so-called "non-jazz" approach is in full flower on this fascinating record. The ever-growing (nine-piece at this point) band builds layers of rhythm and melody with unique effect throughout. On "The Birds Near Her House," a serpentine melodic line weaves through a steady rhythmic bed, building to a frenetic climax. "Scary Children" is a foreboding dirge that still manages to exude true humor. Perhaps that is the most significant aspect of this music: it has real character and life. It doesn't just groove – it starts a conversation.

Cafe Del Mar Volume 18 is collaboration with the leading artists that have played a major role in the history of Cafe del Mar and shaped the Сhillout music culture over the years. 20 of the tracks are especially composed for this project, which encapsulate the original spirit of Cafe del Mar. Volume 18 sees the return of many iconic artists such as Afterlife, Moby, Chicane, Bent and Underworld back to the series.
