At the height of her decade-long rise to fame, Julieta Venegas released her first live album, MTV Unplugged, a star-studded and meticulously arranged performance recorded before 450 adoring fans in Mexico City. She performs her greatest hits, of course, but she also adds to her set list relatively obscure songs – most delightfully "Esta Vez," a ballad from her debut album, Aquí (1998) – and several new songs, including the international chart-topping lead single, "El Presente." As with many MTV Unplugged albums, guest stars are featured throughout; most noteworthy among them here are Spanish rapper Mala Rodríguez, who performs in the place of Chilean rapper Anita Tijoux on "Eres Para Mí," and Brazilian superstar Marisa Monte, who duets in Portuguese on "Ilusión" (a new song written by Venegas, Monte, and Arnaldo Antunes). Guest star or not, the performances are each interesting in their arrangements, which are generally quite different from their studio original counterparts.
Unplugged is an acoustic live album by Canadian musician Bryan Adams. The album was recorded completely on September 26, 1997, at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. Recorded by David Hewitt and Bob Clearmountain on the Remote Recording Silver Truck. Adams was joined by Irish piper Davy Spillane and Michael Kamen who wrote orchestrations for many of the songs and brought students from the Juilliard School to play them. Three new songs were included; "Back To You", "When You Love Someone", and "A Little Love". The song "If Ya Wanna Be Bad - Ya Gotta Be Good" makes its debut on an album, originally appearing on the B-side of "Let's Make a Night to Remember" - to which it is paired on the Unplugged album.
MTV have been producing 'unplugged' specials for many years now with some big name artists such as Kiss, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Eric Clapton, R.E.M., Live, Bryan Adams - the list is endless - but sadly they are yet to release the majority of these on DVD. There have been a few, Bryan Adams, Alice in Chains, Bjork, Shakira and even Lauryn Hill have hit the shelves, and now it is the turn of Staind. Although they only have three albums to their credit thus far and a fourth due for release later in 2003, Staind have established a large following in a very short time. Their first album Tormented was produced in 1996 by the band themselves and sold simply by word of mouth.
Paul McCartney recorded the Unplugged TV show at the 'new' Limehouse Television Studios on the 25th January 1991. The original Limehouse, in London's Isle Of Dogs, was demolished in 1988 during the building of Canary Wharf. The studio relocated to Wembley (to the old Lee International Film Studios) in 1989 and the Limehouse name disappeared in 1992 when it's parent Company, Trilion, went out of business. The facility is now known as Fountain Studios.
