Time is by its very nature such an ephemeral entity that it remains one of the central enigmas of our existence. When, for example, does "what happened" become "history"? That seems an especially cogent question in this supercharged era of 24 hour news cycles, when virtually every picayune situation around the world is deemed "Urgent" or "Breaking" or some other adjective denoting something of utmost import. History Channel of course attempts to separate the wheat from the chaff, putting both minutiae as well as larger arching stories into their proper context...

On the outs in Hollywood due to the blacklist, director Edward Dmytryk briefly operated in England in the late 1940s. Though filmed in its entirety in London, Dmytryk's Give Us This Day is set in New York during the depression. Fellow blacklistee Sam Wanamaker is starred as the head of an Italian immigrant family struggling to survive the economic crisis. Perhaps had it been made in Hollywood as intended, Give Us This Day would not have been allowed to run on for 120 minutes, nor would the actors have been permitted to indulge in terminal sanctimony. Based on Pietro di Donato's novel Christ in Concrete, Give Us This Day was released in the US under the intriguing title Salt to the Devil.

During WW2, Japan and the US each developed chemical weapons and trained their troops to use them. Near the end of the Pacific War, the Imperial Japanese Army stockpiled vast amounts of poison gas for use as a last resort. The US military, meanwhile, drew up chemical weapons plans that would have devastated Japan. After the war, both the US and Japan concealed the truth concerning these weapons. But newly unearthed documents and personal accounts shed light on this dark legacy.

Behzad, a filmmaker from Tehran travels to a remote mountain village secretly planning to record a local ritual ceremony surrounding an old dying woman. Upon arrival, Behzad and his crew are met by Farzad, a young boy from the town who at first becomes their guide but ultimately becomes their informant on the fate of the old woman. Convincing the locals that they are archeologists looking for buried treasure, Behzad attempts to befriend them with mixed results. As the rustling wind, golden light and deep shadows of the village cast an alluring spell, the deathwatch drags on and the woman stubbornly clings to life, leaving Behzad's crew impatient. Evocative and haunting, THE WIND WILL CARRY US is constructed with Kiarostami's trademark soulful serenity, creating an extraordinarily beautiful and moving film. New Yorker Video
