When elementary courses in discrete and combinatorial mathematics first became popular, they usually covered a broad spectrumofpure and applied topics. Most of the students were in Mathematics and Computer Science, with a handful ofbrave souls from other disciplines. Those other students usually found the courses quite difficult. However, the applications were useful in a numberofareas. The teaching of discrete topics has evolved into two streams. The more math­ ematical parts are studied in courses called Discrete Mathematics, and more ad­ vanced, more rigorous courses called Combinatorics, or named for specific areas (Graph Theory, Combinatorial Designs, Cryptography, and so on). Introductions to those areas of applicable discrete mathematics used by students in business, management and the social sciences are usually called Finite Mathematics, and e1ementary courses on this material are now standard at many colleges and uni­ versities.These courses are typically offered at the freshman level although many students take them later in their careers.

Advanced level mathematics syllabuses are once again undergoing changes of content and approach, following the revolution in the early 1960swhich led to the unfortunate dichotomy between 'modern' and 'traditional' mathematics. The current trend in syllabuses for Advanced level mathematics now being developed and published by many GCE boards is towards an integrated ap- proach, taking the best of the topics and approaches of the modern and tradi- tional, in an attempt to create a realistic examination target through syllabuses which are maximal for examining and minimal for teaching. In addition, result- ing from a number of initiatives, core syllabuses are being developed for Ad- vanced level mathematics consisting of techniques of pure mathematics as taught in schools and colleges at this level.

This is a textbook suitable for a year-long course in analysis at the ad­ vanced undergraduate or possibly beginning-graduate level. It is intended for students with a strong background in calculus and linear algebra, and a strong motivation to learn mathematics for its own sake. At this stage of their education, such students are generally given a course in abstract algebra, and a course in analysis, which give the fundamentals of these two areas, as mathematicians today conceive them.

The gratifying response to Counterexamples in analysis (CEA) was followed, when the book went out of print, by expressions of dismay from those who were unable to acquire it. The connection of the present volume with CEA is clear, although the sights here are set higher. In the quarter-century since the appearance of CEA, mathematical education has taken some large steps reflected in both the undergraduate and graduate curricula. What was once taken as very new, remote, or arcane is now a well-established part of mathematical study and discourse.

Functional Analysis is a comprehensive, 2-volume treatment of a subject lying at the core of modern analysis and mathemati- cal physics. The first volume reviews basic concepts such as the measure, the integral, Banach spaces, bounded operators and generalized functions. Volume II moves on to more ad- vanced topics including unbounded operators, spectral decomposition, expansion in generalized eigenvectors, rigged spaces, and partial differential operators.
