To paraphrase Tolstoy, all happy memories feel more or less the same; but the unhappy times are experienced differently by each one of us. We’ve all had some really tough weeks, which sometimes turned into months, and (with a bit of bad luck) into years… I like to think that “off” years help us grow and prepare for the beautiful things that will undoubtedly come our way (I am an optimist at heart), but living through dark times is a complicated process.

This collection of piano music is a welcome reminder of the many fascinating stylistic strands that colour George Enescu’s work. Seriously under-rated today, he exerted a powerful influence on all those who came under his spell, including Yehudi Menuhin, for whom Enescu remained ‘the greatest musician’. Pianist Matei Varga is a prizewinner of numerous international competitions, among them the Maria Canals Competition in Barcelona, the Porto International Piano Competition and the George Enescu Competition in Bucharest.

"It is a special album. Probably it became special because it did not set this as an aim. It is special because it does not seek new ways at any cost, does not want to mediate or convince anybody of anything. It is special because the motivation of the musicians playing on the album went beyond self-expression. They set themselves free of inner compulsion to give way to music. And finally, it is special because however, it draws on well-known methods, it is new, sincere, easy, spontaneous, calm and exciting at the same time." (Gabor Varga)

While these recordings by the Hungarian Quartet contain perfectly acceptable performances and adequately idiomatic interpretations of Schubert's later chamber music for string quartet and quintet, they contain nothing more than that. In the late '50s and early '60s, the Hungarian Quartet was a widely respected group playing in the central European tradition of plumy intonation, sugary sonorities, sometimes scrappy ensemble, and often sentimental interpretations.

“The compositions on this album, played by the Gabor Varga Jazz Trio – unlike the previous albums – were not born on a piano but on a ‘Rhodes Mark I. Stage Piano’.

Few Russian musicians in the second half of the nineteenth century could match the eminence of Anton Rubinstein. As a piano virtuoso he was internationally admired, as a progressive educator he had profound influence, and as a composer he was both significant and successful. The Symphony No. 6 in A minor, Op. 111 was his last symphony, composed in 1866, and fully revealing those qualities of grace and energy, as well as clever scoring, that make his works so appealing.

Tibor Varga was in his early thirties in 1953 when he was selected for a prestigious coupling on an English Columbia LP (SX 1017). He was joined by one of the country’s best orchestras under the experienced Walter Susskind who invariably offered sympathetic accompaniments to his soloists.
