The baritone Tito Gobbi is considered one of the greatest singers of the 20th century. He was particularly celebrated for his live performances of 19th century Italian opera repertoire, and especially the music of Giuseppe Verdi. The recordings in this ten-CD collection were made between 1942 and 1960. The worldwide fame of Tito Gobbi (1913-1984) was founded on the seemingly endless diversity of his vocal style and acting ability, with which he turned the characters of his stage personas into dramatic experiences for his audience.
Roberto Alagna is the kind of ‘opera singer’ who can sing for all with such infectious pleasure that all we can do is sit back and enjoy. And so happy are we to listen to him that there’s only one thing we feel we should say to him: thank you. This collection features aria from Puccini, Verdi, Donizetti, Gounoud, Massenet, Bizet, Berlioz, Offenbach and Bernstein.
Classical Moods is a four-disc collection of short pieces of classical music put together with the thought of soothing listeners with nice melodies. The collection has all the big names, like Mozart, Debussy, Bach, Gershwin, and Rachmaninov, and their big hits, like "Swan Lake," "Clair de Lune," "The William Tell Overture," "Sabre Dance," and "Rhapsody in Blue." Each disc contains a great deal of music, as many of the pieces are excerpts and movements taken from larger works. The set may be a nice starting point for a new fan of classical, as all the great melodies are here and presented on a platter for easy consumption. More sophisticated fans of the music won't have much use for it.
Universal's ubiquitous Twentieth Century Masters series is mostly oriented toward popular music, offering no-frills but generally reliable greatest-hits collections for artists whose catalogs may often present a variety of compilations, confusing for the buyer. There's nothing really wrong with this group of Luciano Pavarotti selections, but the great Italian tenor is not especially accurately represented here. Nearly half the selections are Neapolitan songs or come from related semi-popular genres. Pavarotti has a good time with these, but he is less noted for singing them than are other operatic figures.

He has the classy Prague Philharmonic backing him, conducted by one of the more sought after Italian opera conductors of the younger generation.
