«La Messa da Requiem» de Verdi est l'une des trois grandes messes de ce genre composées au XIXe siècle, avec celle de Berlioz et celle de Fauré, outre le «Deutsches Requiem» de Brahms. Verdi témoigne dans cette oeuvre de toute sa maîtrise quant à l'écriture vocale, tant des quatre solistes que du choeur, tout comme l'orchestre, servi par une écriture d'une grande noblesse. Grâce au «mapping» vidéo, «Le Requiem» est mis en images par Philippe Druillet, qui a créé pour cette occasion une quinzaine de peintures originales. Les dessins de cet artiste sont projetés et animés en relief sur le mur d'enceinte du Théâtre Antique d'Orange tout au long de la soirée, accompagnant ainsi cette oeuvre magistrale de Verdi.

Riccardo Muti Conductor Riccardo Muti has been regarded as the Toscanini of the present day. Not just a Toscanini-style taskmaster who preaches fidelity to the score and presides over intense, hard-driven performances, Muti insists on beautiful tone as well as disciplined ensemble, capitalizing on a youthful Italian glamour. In 2021, Muti led the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert for the sixth time and was heard leading the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in a performance of Verdi's Requiem. Muti was born in Naples on July 28, 1941. He initially learned piano and violin under his father, a physician. He attended the Verdi Conservatory in Milan, studying composition with Bruno Bettinelli and conducting with Antonino Votto. Muti won the Guido Cantelli Conducting Competition in 1967, leading to his professional debut with the RAI Orchestra in 1968.

Recorded live at a concert in the large hall of the Musikverein in Vienna in November 1991, this performance of Verdi’s dramatic Requiem is really commanding. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the chorus of the Vienna State Opera respond appropriately to Abbado’s exciting but not over-operatic handling of the work, and the recording is admirably clear. The soloists are a fine and well-matched quartet.
