A high-adrenaline tale of young climber Peter Garrett, who must launch a treacherous and extraordinary rescue effort up K2, the world's second highest peak. Confronting both his own limitations and the awesome power of nature's uncontrollable elements, Peter risks his life to save his sister, Annie, and her summit team in a race against time. The team is trapped in an icy grave at 26,000 feet - a death zone above the vertical limit of endurance where the human body cannot survive for long. Peter Garrett (O'Donnell) is a wildlife photographer and retired climber who a few years earlier caused his father to fall off a cliff face and plummet to his death in order to save his sister and his own lives (following his Dad's orders). Peter hasn't been able to move on and has subsequently retired from climbing and continued with his photography instead. Peter's sister Annie (Tunney) has become a renowned mountain climber. Peter happens to show up at base camp as Annie attempts to climb K2 in Pakistani Kashmir, the world's second highest mountain, which is very dangerous to climb because of the tough conditions which await at the summit. The expedition is funded by wealthy industrialist Elliot Vaughn (Paxton) who is also going to climb, with the help of his friend Tom McLaren (Lea). There is a huge party the night before the climbers begin the trek. Vaughn is introduced to Peter, who he asks to accompany them on the trip, but Peter instantly refuses.

Lorsque la cordée a dévissé, Peter Garrett, un jeune alpiniste, a coupé la corde qui retenait son père Royce au-dessus du vide pour sauver la vie de sa soeur Annie et la sienne. Depuis, Annie et lui ne se voient plus. Trois ans plus tard, le hasard les réunit au pied du K2, où le richissime Elliot Vaughn organise une expédition. Pour la jeune femme, cette montagne réputée très dangereuse constitue un véritable défi. Le destin frappe à nouveau. Suite à une avalanche dévastatrice, Annie, Elliot et Tom, le chef de l'expédition, se retrouvent prisonniers d'une crevasse ensevelie à près de 8 000 mètres d'altitude. Leur emplacement étant inacessible par hélicoptère, Peter doit rechausser les crampons pour aller secourir sa soeur et son équipe. Avec une poignée d'alpinistes chevronnés, dont l'énigmatique Montgomery Wick et l'impétueuse Monique Aubertine, il se lance sur leurs traces.
