A gifted singer and trumpeter, Spain's Andrea Motis makes emotive, romantic jazz. Born in Barcelona in 1995, Motis studied trumpet and saxophone from a young age. By the time she was 13 years old, she was singing and playing trumpet in the Sant Andreu Jazz Band under the supervision of her mentor, saxophonist Joan Chamorro. In 2010, at age 15, she made her recorded debut with the standards album Joan Chamorro Presenta Andrea Motis. More well-received albums followed, including 2012's Feeling Good and 2015's Live at Palau de la Música. In 2017, Motis made her Impulse! Records debut with ‘Emotional Dance’.

Then as now, the compilations are not only suitable for finding out about new tracks and artists from the jazz scene, they are also great listening pleasure. The colorful mix of well-known jazz artists and young talents this time includes the Blue Note artists Marcus Strickland, Kendrick Scott Oracle and James Francies, the Hollywood star Jeff Goldblum, Earth, Wind & Fire singer Philip Bailey, World Music Diva, who shone for the first time as a jazz pianist Angélique Kidjo, jazz prodigy Jacob Collier, the British high-flyer The Comet Is Coming etc.

This two-CD sampler is most highly recommended for listeners not familiar with Stan Getz's recordings of the 1950s and '60s. Starting with a version of "Stella by Starlight" that co-stars guitarist Jimmy Raney, this set matches Getz's cool tenor with such artists as trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie and Conte Candoli, trombonist J.J. Johnson, baritonist Gerry Mulligan, pianists Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans and Chick Corea, valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer and vibraphonist Gary Burton. Also included are his two main bossa nova hits "Desafinado" and "The Girl from Ipanema" along with a couple of tracks from Getz's highly-rated Focus album. It's a fine overview of the great tenor's middle years.

The second of Jon Batiste's recordings to emerge from his November 2018 residency at New York's Village Vanguard, Chronology of a Dream: Live at the Village Vanguard is a vibrant set showcasing the keyboardist and his earthy ensemble. As with 2019's Anatomy of Angels, Chronology of a Dream highlights Batiste's jazz roots with a set of primarily original songs that find him drawing upon funky, '60s- and '70s-style hard bop and soul. Joining him in his group are a cadre of adept, high-energy players including drummer Joe Saylor, bassist Phil Kuehn, percussionist Negan Santos, trumpeter Giveton Gelin, saxophonists Tivon Pennicott and Patrick Bartley, tubist/trumpeter Jon Lampley, and guitarist Louis Cato, all of whom get moments to shine here. With his rise into the national spotlight leading his band Stay Human on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, it's sometimes easy to forget that Batiste has hardcore jazz credentials.

Although serious fans and collectors will have little use for the disc, Ultimate Lester Young is a solid collection of 12 highlights from the saxophonist's Verve recordings as selected by Wayne Shorter. For the curious neophyte, the disc offers a good overview of Young's time at the label, featuring the saxophonist in a variety of different settings, including combos with Harry "Sweets" Edison, Oscar Peterson, Buddy Rich, Nat King Cole, Roy Eldridge, and Count Basie. Certainly, the disc should be thought of as an introduction, not the final word, but on that level it works very well. Among the featured numbers are "Pennies from Heaven" and "Lester Leaps Again."

In November 1961, tenor sax titan Stan Getz was leading one of his best yet shortest-lived lineups, with pianist Steve Kuhn, bassist John Neves, and drummer Roy Haynes. The previously unreleased Getz at the Gate showcases this group at peak power on the bandstand. In sound quality, it far exceeds Live at Birdland 1961, which captures nearly the same band (with Jimmy Garrison on bass) on many of the same tunes, earlier in the same month.
