The broad spectrum of the species studied and the application of modern anatomical, optical and bio-mechanical methods allowed the author to describe previously unknown structural features of the peripheral part of the auditory system in animals with a varied specialization of hearing.

Efferent sensory systems have emerged as major components of processing by the central nervous system. Whereas the afferent sensory systems bring environmental information into the brain, efferent systems function to monitor, sharpen, and attend selectively to certain stimuli while ignoring others.

Many congenitally deaf infants and children suffer vestibular failure, which produces problems with their postural control, locomotion and gait. However it is known that these children can eventually catch up with their normal balance control status in terms of development and growth as a result of central vestibular compensation.
