The Vienna Boys’ Choir, one of the world's oldest boys’ choirs, maintains its status as a living tradition after more than 500 years. Haydn and Schubert both started their musical careers there; Antonio Salieri was a member of the admissions jury. What is captivating about these recordings is both the clarity of textual and musical declamation and a very special, authentic charm deriving from the slight Viennese accent. Performances by the Vienna Boys’ Choir are not only a matter of perfect pronunciation and intonation, but also of a musical sensuality that is vital to interpretations of Haydn and Schubert, yet frequently overlooked.

Scherchen was one of the leading conductors in the middle part of the 20th Century, especially valued for his pioneering performances of the contemporary music of his time. He was essentially self-taught as a musician, and became a violist in the Blüthner Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic when he was sixteen. In 1911 he was an assistant to Arnold Schoenberg in the preparation of Pierrot Lunaire for performance. Following its Berlin premiere, the piece was taken on a tour in which Scherchen conducted.

One of the great unsung conductors of the middle twentieth century, Rudolf Kempe enjoyed a strong reputation in England but never quite achieved the international acclaim that he might have had with more aggressive management, promotion, and recording. Not well enough known to be a celebrity but too widely respected to count as a cult figure, Kempe is perhaps best remembered as a connoisseur's conductor, one valued for his strong creative temperament rather than for any personal mystique. He studied oboe as a child, performed with the Dortmund Opera, and, in 1929, barely out of his teens, he became first oboist of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.

Lohengrin, WWV 75, is a Romantic opera in three acts composed and written by Richard Wagner, first performed in 1850. The story of the eponymous character is taken from medieval German romance, notably the Parzival of Wolfram von Eschenbach, and its sequel Lohengrin, itself inspired by the epic of Garin le Loherain. It is part of the Knight of the Swan legend.

Angelic Voices: The Best of the Vienna Boys' Choir  Music

Posted by biory at Oct. 31, 2005

For over 500 years, the Vienna Boys' Choir has been synonymous with choral music. In a city that has been home to many of the greatest names in music history, it continues to be one of the most recognized names and sounds in the world.
A compilation of "greatest hits," ANGELIC VOICES features most of the expected classics, including Georg Frideric Handel's "Hallelujah" and Franz Gruber's "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht." However, there are several surprises in store for listeners, including an amusing arrangement of Carlos Jobim's 'The Girl from Ipanema.'

Postcards from Vienna: drawn largely from the supreme players of the Wiener Philharmoniker, collected here are the Decca recordings of Viennese chamber music ensembles, including the New Vienna Octet, Vienna Wind Soloists, Wiener Waldhornverein and Vienna Flute Trio, many making their first international appearance on CD. Led by clarinetist Alfred Boskovsky, the first line-up of the Vienna Octet made it's last recording for Decca in 1972, but Boskovsky was behind the revival of the group's name, having already chosen the young members of the Vienna Philharmonic who would carry on the work of the ensemble and it's traditions of superbly mellifluous, silver-toned playing.
