The late Hans Keller regarded Hindemith as one of the few composers able to produce what he called 'intrinsic' quartets, that's to say quartets addressed in the first place to the player (the listener being, as Keller put it, "a more or less welcome eavesdropper"). This collection includes the recently re-discovered early work in C major. The performances are technically and musically excellent. As a previous reviewer has noted, there is much to be said for listening to them in the order in which they were composed, so as to follow the development of Hindemith's style over a period of three decades.

Paul Hindemith is without question, one of the 20th century's most industrious composers. One of his most famous accomplishments is that he successfully completed a sonata for every major instrument in the orchestra. Hindemith began his career as a violinist amid the turmoil of WWI, and he wrote by far more literature for the viola than any other composer in history. He had an early success becoming concertmaster of the Frankfort Opera Orchestra at the young age of 19. He later turned to viola in 1919, and it was to remain his favorite instrument for the rest of his life. Hindemith was the violist of the Amar Quartet, founded in 1921 for the premiere of the Second String Quartet. He later became known as a soloist in Europe, premiering his own viola works as well as the Milhaud Concerto No. 1 and the Walton Viola Concerto. When the Nazis expelled him from his post at the conservatory in Berlin and deprived him of his German audience due to his Jewish ties and the soprano-in-the-bathtub scene in the opera Neues vom Tage (News of the Day), which apparently shocked Hitler, Hindemith moved to Switzerland and made concert tours to the USA before emigrating there in early 1940.

Horn player Louis-Philippe Marsolais devotes an entire album to chamber music for horn by German composer Paul Hindemith (1895-1963). He is joined by pianist David Jalbert, Pentaèdre wind ensemble, and horn players from the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa. Paul Hindemith (1895-1963), an avant-garde composer, remarkable violinist and violist, conductor, and outstanding theorist and pedagogue of the beginning of the 20th century, is one of the key figures in music of the interwar period. At times calm and introspective or complex and tumultuous, his always riveting music is nowadays too seldom performed; an unfortunate reality that has given birth to this recording project honoring the music for horn by one of the most prodigious composers of the 20th century.

On her first album for solo violin, internationally acclaimed and renowned Latvian violinist Baiba Skride interprets selected sonatas by Erwin Schulhoff, Paul Hindemith, Philipp Jarnach and Eduard Erdmann. Although Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for Violin Solo are regarded as the measure of every violinist’s technical skill and maturity, compositions for unaccompanied violin became increasingly rare in subsequent epochs (the classical and the romantic era). It wasn’t until the turn of the 20th century that Max Reger made a conspicuous contribution in this field with altogether eleven sonatas. His example was an impetus that very plausibly inspired his contemporaries and successors to come up with the four contributions to this genre from the 1920s on this album.

Brun grew up in Lucerne and his time active as a composer coincided with a period of high creative output of Swiss music. Brun’s repertoire sits alongside other native composers such as Honegger, Schoeck and Bloch. The crowded market, combined with the struggle to find a publisher (only three out of his ten symphonies were published in his lifetime) offers one indication as to why Brun’s works failed to reach the mainstream public. While not a household name, Brun is often touted as the Swiss answer to Vaughan Williams and Edward Elgar. Brun’s works have a nostalgic touch; they draw on the Romantic and Classical eras in their emotional sincerity and defined forms, but always with a modern flavour.

Following the success of their Liszt album on Odradek, Duo Tsuyuki & Rosenboom marks its 10th anniversary as a partnership with 'Variations2', sets of variations for two pianos by Brahms, Saint-Saens and Lutoslawski. All the composers featured on this release were inspired by the music of others when writing their sets of variations. Brahms paid a very personal tribute to his late friend, Robert Schumann, when he chose Schumann's final work, the 'Ghost Variations', as the basis for his own Variations, Op. 23. We also hear Brahms' magnificent 'St Anthony' Variations inspired by Haydn, which culminate in a passacaglia (a set of variations within the variations): a masterful achievement through which Brahms elevates the form into music of real depth and sophistication.

„Space is a state of mind. DICE enjoin you to take a trip through that inner space. Musically? You need to listen but once to know that the band's spacey sound - both in structure and effect - lands squarely in the space rock genre. Aside from the space travelling metaphors, the arrangements are very spacey. It's vast, open, floaty … full of star stuff, if you will.
