Where do the sonatas for violin and piano fit into the chronology of Prokofiev’s catalogue? The two sonatas date to the final part of Prokofiev’s career, its Soviet period. In 1918, he left his country of birth for the United States, and then for Europe, before returning definitively to the Soviet Union at the end of 1932. The first sonata, the Sonata in F Minor op. 80, was drafted in the United States in 1938 and completed in 1946, while Prokofiev had completed the second sonata op. 94 in Moscow three years earlier, in 1943, in its original version intended for the flute.

Bibik's music is a rigorous postcard of the Ukrainian aesthetic landscape of the second half of the 20th century, depicting a broad and powerful Sovietism - which fully recognised him - and also a glow in the dark, where composing was a risk, a humanistic commitment.

Nigh on 60 years after his death, the Swiss composer, born in 1880 of Jewish origin, naturalized American in 1924, remains relatively little known by the general public and music lovers alike. Yet his music, full of lyricism, drama, virtuosity, poetry, has all it takes to please. His language combines tonality, bitonality, atonality, elements inherited from the Jewish musical tradition as well as allusions to movie style American music.
