After decades of drifting aimlessly in a musical equivalent of Superman's Phantom Zone, virtuoso guitarist Uli Jon Roth (who along with countryman Michael Schenker virtually wrote the Teutonic guitar hero scrolls during his spell with the Scorpions) finally stumbled upon a viable new creative framework with which to express his still formidable but often mislaid talents. Doing away with the psychedelic Hendrix worship that had branded him both a pale imitation and dated anachronism throughout the '80s and '90s, Roth rediscovered sure footing via the Transcendental Sky Guitar concept, which combined his expertise on a custom-designed instrument (the seven-string Sky Guitar) with backing by a full-fledged orchestral ensemble…

With this third instalment (the sixty-first volume of the naïve label’s complete Vivaldi Edition) he now has twenty cello concertos under his belt. Christophe Coin has become a noted authority in the work of the brilliant, tirelessly prolific Venetian composer, performing it with a host of different ensembles, such as L’Onda Armonica, the ensemble founded by Sergio Azzolini. As with the first two volumes he alternates between the cello and the violoncello piccolo, providing a palette of highly varied sound colours.

Lucie Horsch celebrates the legacy of Dutch recorder player and conductor Frans Brüggen (1934-2014). A true pioneer of the early music revival, Brüggen amassed a remarkable collection of historic recorders dating from the 1680s-1740s. Those instruments fell silent upon his death 10 years ago. With special access granted by Brüggen’s widow, they have now been revived by one of Brüggen’s compatriots. The instruments are so fragile that at times Lucie was only allowed to play two takes on them - “The end result could almost be regarded as a live recording”.

In this recording, the virtuoso Phoebe Carrai joins Beiliang Zhu to probe the art of London’s forgotten cello masters. The programme and its execution are equally superb, as Carrai and Zhu roll out one world-premiere recording after another…Infusing this project are two ingredients rare in glitzy big-name recordings: the soloists’ long friendship (Zhu studied with Carrai) and their trust in non-canonical music.

Johann Sebastian Bach has always been considered one of the greatest music transcribers of all times. Many of his transcriptions (mostly the ones from Italian composers Vivaldi and Marcello) have become instant classics, and they are still viewed as masterpieces of the baroque repertoire. Bach has always been very active as a transcriber of his own music too. His masterful transcription of his Sonata for viola da gamba & keyboard No. 1, which he transformed into a trio for two flutes and continuo, has given the inspiration for this CD project.

Along with Vivaldi’s ‘Seasons’ or Beethoven’s ‘Fifth’, Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos belong to those works that are so well-known that we risk taking them for granted. In order to (re-)discover the special qualities that can inspire us today, in 2001 Thomas Dausgaard and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra decided to contact six contemporary composer, asking each of them to compose a companion piece to one of the concertos.
