VOICES FROM THE OTHER SIDE is a collection of evocative chamber works performed by cello octet — several with soprano soloist Gabrielle Haigh. Included are Arvo Pärt’s tintinnabuli-style Fratres as well as his L’abbé Agathon, inspired by the remains of a 12th-century leper hospital near Beauvais, France; as well as the beloved Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 by Heitor Villa-Lobos.

Leading Swedish composer Jesper Nordin’s soundscape lies at the crossroads of Swedish traditional music, rock and improvised music. On this recording, Daniel Harding and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra perform Röster (‘voices’), a trilogy whose works are each based on different kinds of Swedish music which the composer sees as being part of his background. In Åkallan (‘Invocation’), Nordin has used the traditional vocal technique called kulning as his starting point.

From the Russian Revolution to America's declaration of war and the lasting horror of Passchendaele, this unique collection of historic recordings contains the voices of those who were there. Among the memorable voices in this compilation are Commander William Ibbett, who experienced the aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution at close quarters; Sir Edward Spears on the mutiny in the French army; and Royal Flying Corps pilots, whose life expectancy could be a low as a single day.
