Michael Newman (Sandler) is a hard working family man, who must please his boss (Hasselhoff), in order to get promoted. Problem is he gets less time with his family, and wishes for a remote in which he can control his life. This soon comes true for Newman, when he meets Morty (Walken), a crazy sales clerk, who has the ultimate remote. A remote in which he can do anything, including muting, skipping and dubbing his life. He finds this to be the opportunity in which he can not only skip every argument, but also skip to his promotion. He sees this as a good idea, until the remote goes horribly wrong.

Lee Phillips (Crystal) is a movie publicist with a major problem with movie stars Gwen Harrison (Zeta-Jones) and Eddie Thomas (Cusack), who are known as "America's Sweethearts". The couple have recently split, with Gwen pairing up with a Spanish actor, Hector (Azaria), and Eddie in a rest home, getting therapy. Hal Weidmann (Walken), the eccentric director of their latest film together, has demanded that the first viewing of the film - before even anyone at the studio sees it - be at a press junket. Lee's job is to keep up the illusion that Gwen and Eddie are still a couple, getting them back together at least until the press junket for the movie.

Kiki est l'assistante dévouée de la belle et égocentrique star de cinéma Gwen Harrison, qui n'est autre que sa soeur. Ce qui est le plus dur, ce n'est pas de supporter les mille et un caprices de madame la grande actrice, c'est d'être secrètement amoureuse de son futur ex-mari, l'irrésistible Eddie, lui aussi acteur. Kiki accepte d'aider l'attaché de presse Lee Phillips dans une mission impossible : réunir lors d'une conférence de presse le célébrissime couple, qui s'est violemment séparé, afin que tous deux présentent aux journalistes leur dernier film. Pour Lee et Kiki, l'épreuve est périlleuse, d'autant plus que le réalisateur fait des siennes, que le patron du studio est hystérique et que Hector, le nouveau compagnon de Gwen, veille jalousement sur elle.
