Released earlier this year, ZZ Ward’s blues-heavy fourth release, Liberation, marked her debut with the legendary Sun imprint. To capitalize on the forward momentum already generated by her grittiest effort to date, Sun is issuing a deluxe version of Liberation featuring bonus tracks recorded at Sun Studio in Memphis. This percolating rendition of the Jesters’ 1966 single “Cadillac Man” is a standout among the extra material.

Liberation is the new LP from blues artist ZZ Ward, celebrating her love of all things blues. Her third release on Sun Records, this album joins her originals, like “Mother,” a song about her new role as a working mother, with covers of classics like Son House’s “Grinnin’ In Your Face.” ZZ’s bold vocals shine on her take on songs from the historic Sun catalog as well, like The Jesters’ “Cadillac Man” and Alvin Robinson’s “Something You Got.” Artist Bio ZZ Ward started singing blues at age 8, driven by her father's record collection. By 16, she was a fixture in local Eugene clubs, merging blues and hip-hop.

The booklet notes for this Scottish audiophile release, perhaps surprisingly in view of American-British annotator and group leader Laurence Dreyfus' background in academic musicology, are models of their kind. They make the best possible case for the viol music of early seventeenth century composer John Ward, who usually plays third or fourth fiddle (or viol) to Gibbons, Dowland, Purcell, and even John Jenkins among general listeners and specialists alike. In both his prose (given in English only) and his interpretations, Dreyfus and his Phantasm consort capture the pleasantly meandering quality of Ward's viol pieces, which lack the melancholy of Dowland's, the pungent and daring dissonance of Gibbons', or the general brilliance of Purcell's.

Prolific songwriter M. Ward has announced his new album ‘Think of Spring‘, a collection of songs originally recorded by Billie Holiday – a muse to Ward and many others.

Inspired by her father’s record collection, Ward’s love of music ignited a flame in her heart and by the age of 12, she was performing blues music. The passion for blues remained a smouldering ember in her career; however, industry demands pressured her to delve into different genres as a young artist. Yet, the blues fire could not be contained with a blast of rebelliousness raging in her current work.
