Pianist Lennie Tristano was an early inspiration and a major influence on the playing of altoist Lee Konitz and tenor saxophonist Warne Marsh. Their very notable and highly original Capitol recordings of 1949 – with the quiet metronomic rhythm section, advanced melodic improvising, and reharmonizations – stood apart from the typical bop of the period. By 1955, when the earliest performances on this 1997 limited-edition, six-CD set were recorded, the trio was not working together very often; in fact, Tristano was mostly functioning as a teacher, only surfacing for occasional records and club dates.

Mosaic's new collection from bandleader Woody Herman is, flat out, one of the most unique sets we've ever issued, thanks to a rare opportunity it gives us to combine the treasures of a few different music libraries. "The Complete Woody Herman Decca, Mars and MGM Sessions (1943-1954)" presents Woody on seven CDs over a remarkable span of his development: at the very beginning of his career leading a band that would become one of the most enduring in music; a few years later, in the studio and in concert at Carnegie Hall, when the band was enjoying its much-deserved, worldwide renown; and during the Third Herd period, when Woody was not only running his own band but his own record operation as well.

Cold Blood is one of the original R'n'B horn bands from the late 60's/ early 70's that exemplified the "East Bay Grease" melding of funk & rock with blues and jazz elements. Lydia Pense has been compared to Janis Joplin, but is a true original and a pioneer in the women's rock movement. Lydia Pense and Cold Blood packed the San Francisco Ballrooms in their heyday, but that was then and this is now. In the now, Lydia Pense and Cold Blood still fill halls with cheering, dancing, foot-stomping fans. Far from fading over the years, Cold Blood has flourished. In 1974 their 5th released simply called "Lydia", legendary Stax guitarist Steve Cropper produced and and played on three cuts. A soulful approach with the band playing a blue-eyed funk crossbred. Lydia Pense is in fine form as always.

Fern Kinney’s 1979 debut album “Groove Me” did not produce any across the board smashes like Anita Ward or Stephanie Mills did. But it did produce two club classics that set dance floors on fire and that was no easy feat during Disco obsessed 1979. Both the title track and “Baby Let Me Kiss You” became regulars at clubs across the country. A closer listen to Fern Kinney’s full length album shows the Northern Soul vocalist at home with Disco, R&B, Quiet Storm ballads and Pop Music. An accomplished vocalist, Kinney at times sounds like Deniece Williams. “Under Fire”, “Angel On The Ground”, “Pillow Talk”, and “Together We Are Beautiful” are all lush mid-tempo R&B songs with a driving Disco beat. “Sun, Moon, Rain” is the sole ballad on the set and Kinney handles it well.
