Carl Maria von Weber wrote music that has been admired by composers as diverse as Schumann, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Ravel and Stravinsky. But in his lifetime he was also recognised as one of the finest pianists of the period, with an exceptional technique and a brilliant gift for improvisation.

Weber's first romantic heroine was undoubtedly the clarinet. Ten years before Max and the 'Freischütz', Weber composed his two clarinet concertos and began the Quintet. These three masterpieces he dedicated to the virtuoso Baermann, who substantially reworked the clarinet part of the concertos in his edition, which has now passed into posterity. For his first recording, clarinettist Arthur Stockel returns to the sources of the original scores. More stripped down, the solo part highlights the link between these pieces and the composer's dramatic imagination. Nurtured by Lieder and opera, Arthur Stockel explores their relationship to vocality and gives his instrument a Weberian role, between ardour, tenderness and pain. He is joined by the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, where he has held the post of principal clarinet since 2019, conductor Leo McFall and the Hanson Quartet, who respond with mischievousness (minuet from the Quintet), ardour and grandeur (First Concerto).

Max Weber, widely considered a founder of sociology and the modern social sciences, visited the United States in 1904 with his wife Marianne. The trip was a turning point in Weber's life and it played a pivotal role in shaping his ideas, yet until now virtually our only source of information about the trip was Marianne Weber's faithful but not always reliable 1926 biography of her husband.Max Weber in America carefully reconstructs this important episode in Weber's career, and shows how the subsequent critical reception of Weber's work was as American a story as the trip itself.

In his second ECM appearance (following a critically-acclaimed duo recording with Markus Stockhausen) pianist Florian Weber leads a strong cast through a programme of his compositions and sketches. Whether paying tribute to mentor Lee Konitz on “Honestlee”, impressionistically conveying the glittering “Melody of a Waterfall” or generating impactful drama out of fragments of sound on “Butterfly Effect”, Weber continually draws fresh responses from his players.
