Out of the drawers! Pia Davila and Linda Leine give new perspectives on "ostracised music".

Living jazz legend David Friedman is one of the most influential vibraphonists in the history of the instrument. “Thursday” is not only the first release of Friedman’s brand new Generations Trio, but also the very first release of his new label “Malletmuse Records”. The Generations Trio provides a musical example of intuitive communication and intense interaction, resulting in an audible process of music-making, which speaks directly to the listening audience. These three generations, with shooting star Tilo Weber on drums, in demand sideman Oliver Potratz on bass, and retired Jazz Professor David Friedman on vibes, develop an amazingly orchestral band sound, which is fresh and hip, while firmly rooted in the deep tradition of Jazz.

Not every musician can pull off a program in front of an audience that ranges through a wide variety of jazz styles, but Monty Alexander does so, even within the opener, "On Green Dolphin Street." Starting this familiar standard in a bop mode, he detours into boogie-woogie until guitarist Ernest Ranglin takes over. His lovely improvised introduction to "Emily" gives way to a much slower than typical arrangement, which emphasizes the beauty of Henry Mancini's original conception, though with a few changes incorporated by the leader…

Clarinetist Pierre Génisson’s new album features many elective affinities. Pierre Génisson and the Quartet 212, made up of musicians from the Met Opera, gather around the quintets of Mozart and Weber, related by Wolfi and Constance’s wedding. Those two radiant scores, where the warm and voluptuous timbre of the clarinet melts in the brightness of the strings, frame their passionate dialogue in a sophisticated blend that the album’s title, How I met Mozart, updates mischievously.

Perhaps the world's most famous Italian jazz musician, trumpeter Enrico Rava has established himself as both accompanist and leader. In the 1970s and 1980s he worked with Pat Metheny, Michel Petrucciani, John Abercrombie, Joe Henderson, Richard Galliano, Miroslav Vitouš, Andrea Centazzo, Joe Lovano, Gil Evans and Cecil Taylor.

Michael Spyres is a singer who challenges and reshapes perceptions – as his albums BariTenor and Contra-Tenor have shown. Now, preparing for his debut at the Bayreuth Festival in Summer 2024, he searches In the Shadows to reveal more about Wagner and the origins of his music dramas. “Wagner evokes a varying spectrum of emotions – awe, ecstasy, even trepidation,” explains Spyres. “This album endeavours to illuminate the composers who languish in the shadows, who formed the foundation of Wagner’s compositions and sculpted the framework of vocal writing for the Wagnerian tenor.”

On these two CDs the Salzburg Wind Philharmonic with its principal conductor Hansjörg Angerer presents symphonic wind music of the highest sophistication – largely pieces well known from the usual symphonic concert repertoire.

Andrew Cyrille’s title Lebroba is a contraction of Leland, Brooklyn and Baltimore, birthplaces of the protagonists of an album bringing together three of creative music’s independent thinkers. Each of them made his first ECM appearance long ago: drummer Andrew Cyrille on Marion Brown’s Afternoon of a Georgia Faun (1970), trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith on his own classic Divine Love (1978), and guitarist Bill Frisell on Eberhard Weber’s Fluid Rustle (1979); these are, of course, players of enduring influence. Frisell contributed to Cyrille’s previous ECM disc The Declaration of Musical Independence, but Lebroba marks a first-time meeting for the guitarist and Wadada Leo Smith.
