Herbie Mann was still primarily known as a bop or swing flutist on "Love and the Weather". The material here is a good example of Mann's early style, recorded shortly before he became fascinated with world music, Afro-Cuban and Latin sounds. At the time this album was released in 1956, the flute wasn't quite embraced as a jazz instrument but Mann helped change that with a sound of his own.

This vocal group was denied critical acclaim unlike many vocal groups of the seventies and may have been considered just another Temptations wanna be group ( there were several ), however, this group was brimming with talent and while you can hear some Temptation influences, the Philly sound is quite evident as well. The lineup of the Futures consisted of Kenny Crew, James and John King, Harry McGilberry, and Richard Wright, who was replaced by Frank Washington. You may remember that Harry McGilberry did a stint with the Temptations from 1995 to 2003 as a replacement for Ray Davies who replaced Melvin Franklin.

Gene Krupa was one of the most admired and influential drummers in the history of jazz, with his impact extending into the pop era, not least through his effective defining of the make-up of the modern drum kit. As a drummer and bandleader in the swing and big band eras of the late 1930s and ‘40s, he became known for what the New York Times called his “frenzied, flashy” drumming which was revolutionary in its day, and elevated the rile of the drummer from pure accompanist to being an important solo voice in the band. This 48-track 2-CD collection features all his 27 career hits on the Brunswick, Columbia, Okeh and RCA-Victor labels, plus selected renowned recordings from across this era. It includes his Top 10 hits “It All Comes Back To Me Now”, “High On A Windy Hill”, “Just A Little Bit South Of North Carolina”, “Along The Navajo Trail”, “Chickery Chick” and “Bonaparte's Retreat”. There are performances by his noted female vocalists Irene Day and Anita O’Day, and by his other featured vocalists Jerry Kruger, Howard Dulaney, Roy Eldridge, Johnny Desmond, Carolyn Grey and Bobby Scots. It offers a fascinating cross-section of his recordings, from the more mainstream pop material that comprised many of his hits to the hard-hitting big band jazz for which he was especially renowned, and it’s an entertaining showcase for his music.

Another of Dakota Staton's fine outings from the latter half of the '50s, More Than the Most finds the singer working her magic on a varied selection of standards and relatively obscure sides. While maybe not as well-regarded as her famous debut, The Late, Late Show, this Staton release stands as one of the singer's better early efforts. Enveloped in Sid Feller's urbane mix of romantic ballad backdrops and West Coast-style swingers, Staton wraps her coyly seductive pipes around standouts like "East of the Sun," "September in the Rain," and "Some Days It's Monday." Mixing in some of Dinah Washington's muscle and Sarah Vaughan's airy sophistication, Staton ably navigates this fine program of classic pop-jazz.

The seventh CD in the Classics label's Gene Krupa reissue series is mostly fairly weak. Despite Krupa's presence, his band at the time was average (only trumpeter Shorty Sherock had much of a reputation as a soloist) and, of the 21 selections on this disc, only three are instrumentals. Irene Daye's nine vocals are certainly listenable, although Howard Dulany's seven ballad features are more routine; Daye and Dulany take "You Forgot About Me" as a vocal duet. The instrumentals ("Hamtramck," "Full Dress Hop" and an excellent version of "Sweet Georgia Brown") are fine, but this CD is only recommended to completists.
