Mari Takano, from the standard publicity photograph she uses, looks like a soccer mom ready to go out on a date with her husband, taking a phone call in the kitchen before she heads out the door. Nothing in the photo would give you the impression that Takano is a venturesome and fiercely original classical composer who has studied with Brian Ferneyhough and György Ligeti.

Jazz, like any art, is a rich loam of inspiration and direction. A given contemporary artist has many options for smartly programmed recordings centered on paying tribute. It may be homage to a repertoire, a selected composer, or a particular peer within their own musical neighborhood. Cassandra Wilson's recent Coming Forth By Day (Sony Legacy, 2015) is only one of the most recent such recording addressing the music of Billie Holiday. Holiday has been the focus of many homage recordings. Certainly, she cannot be considered a stylistic black hole robbing equal talent of similar recognition.

Double subtext in the name of the new album of American saxophonist Roxy Koss. Firstly, the quintet is exactly the format that Roxy loves the most and in which this album is recorded, and secondly, Quintet is exactly the fifth album in her personal discography. Five is a jubilee, albeit small, and Roxy Koss decided to celebrate it by making the fifth album an anthology of her favorite compositions from previous works, of course, in a new reading. She had plenty to choose from, because Koss is already an experienced and sophisticated master instrumentalist and band leader, as well as a talented composer.

Borrowing its name from a poem by the great Maya Angelou, Macha Gharibian’s fourth album ‘Phenomenal Women’ is set to release on January 24th on Rue Bleue Meredith Records. Captivated by a video of Angelou reciting her poem in London in 1987, Macha Gharibian found herself urged to pay musical tribute to the poet, and to the strength of all women. “In all the battles we are fighting right now—against sexism, the violence women endure, and for equality—I want to tell them, “We are brilliant, we are the wealth, the intelligence, and the power, we are phenomenal.”” Influenced by the school of ‘natural vocalists’ in Nina Simone, Jeanne Lee and Joni Mitchell, Gharibian’s luminescent energy leads her listener through the record’s delicately varied tonal palette of celebration, prayer, joy, and melancholy across the album’s ten original compositions and three imaginative covers.

This exceptional recording features such legendary jazz artists as Cannonball Adderley with Bill Evans, Louis Armstrong & Oscar Peterson, Chet Baker, Anita O Day, Billie Holiday, The Nat King Cole Trio and many other wonderful artists singing some of your favorite songs. Most of the songs were recorded in the 1950s and as a result, 21st century technology (re-mixing and re-mastering) has benefited the original sound quality. My Baby Just Cares For Me sung by Nina Simone opens the program. Her instantly recognizable vocals and her piano playing are a sure reminder of what this inimitable singer brought to the jazz genre.
