Four CDs. Following on from the highly popular first volume of Gary Crowley's Punk & New Wave, Demon Records are proud to introduce Vol.2. A period when a raft of bands and artists imbued a new energy into the country's musical culture. This mega 77 track collection features some of the biggest names from this period such as The Clash, Ramones, The Jam, The Cure and The Slits. Alongside the bigger names, this set shines a light on the lesser known bands, those who might have left just the one great single in their wake such as The Limit, Gary Valentine, The Wardens, Basement 5 and The Limps. Many of these incredibly rare tracks appearing here for the very first time on CD. The collection features a 32 page booklet which includes an introduction and track by track notes alongside band anecdotes from the likes of Viv Albertine (The Slits), Damian O'Neill (The Undertones), Glen Matlock (Rich Kids), Gary Valentine, Mike Sweeney (Salford Jets) and more. Completing the package is a sublime selection of fascinating photos and memorabilia depicting this period of UK music culture like nothing else out there.

Attempts to encapsulate the vastness of Punk Rock (capitalized throughout this piece, because let's face it, it's a proper noun) throughout its now lengthy history have all fallen well short of the mark. Is it a musical genre or a cultural movement? A hairstyle or the very essence of DIY? Don Letts, original punk biographer, DJ and musician, in his film, Punk: Attitude sums it up just perfectly with that film's very title. Punk is an attitude and, as he puts it himself, "part of an ongoing movement of counterculture." After airing on the Independent Film Channel as part of "Punk Month", Letts' film claws its way, gasping for air, out of a packed house at CBGB's or the Roxy and onto DVD for home consumption.

One of the great Things about music is that it offers more than just a listening experience, it creates lifestyles, movements and fashions. When PUNK first started it left no middle ground, you wars in or you were out and your response was anything but passive whichever side of the barbed wire you sat on.

Amazon Review by David Sheridan
Lots of good new wave era chestnuts on this compilation. I wonder where perhaps Talking Heads, Echo & the Bunnymen or Graham Parker are, why no Nick Lowe/Dave Edmunds/Rockpile, why no "Girl of My Dreams" by Bram Tchaikovsky, and they definitely seemed to put this together having drawn a somewhat arbitrary line in the sand somewhere between punk and new wave (no Pistols, no Clash, but the Ramones and Sham 69 are here). And then we get the Tubes (almost more musical theatre than new wave) and Hazel O'Connor (wtf?). And they also include whatever a Jilted John is. There's more than a little overlap with some other compilations and box sets out there (although I still know of no proper full sized new wave box set, Rhino, where are you?), but this will send those of us of a certain age nostalgically back to the days of Jimmy Carter in the White House, lining up for 79 cent gallons of gas and skinny ties with the knot a few inches below your collar…remember the first time you heard My Sharona? Maybe in your Ford Maverick while sitting in one of those gas lines…

The Stranglers were among the very first punk bands, and like many others, had their roots in the UK pub band scene. In fact as a pub band their success was lacking atr best. But punk happened and they fit right in. It could be said they were punk before there was such a thing!

Founded in Chiddingfold, England in 1974 by guitarist/vocalist Hugh Cornwell, bassist/vocalist Jean-Jacques Burnell, keyboardist Dave Greenfield and drummer Jet Black. Always dressed in black, playing with a heavy, dark, moody sound (oddly contrasted by Greenfield's often 'happy' organ sound) they were the progenitors of "goth-rock."

The Epoxies were an American New Wave band from Portland, Oregon formed in 2000. Heavily influenced by Punk Rock and New Wave the band jokingly described themselves as robot garage rock. The group's music is a novel synthesis of Punk Rock and New Wave but their lyrics are strictly focused on sci-fi themes, Atomic Age futurism, alienation, and consumerism.
