Phalanx Ambassadors is the latest release from pianist/keyboardist/composer Matt Mitchell, whom Will Layman in PopMatters calls “the most complete and well-integrated improvising pianist of the last 15 years.” He also called his prior release, A Pouting Grimace (Pi 2017), “brilliant and varied… animated by breathtaking compositional imagination and startling arrangements.” Phalanx Ambassadors similarly features works that burst forth with intricate detail, featuring precise execution of multi-layered rhythmic material, adventurous harmonic exploration and otherworldly melodies. While rigorously structured, the music also leaves ample room for intertwining improvisation.

Genre: Jazz | Label: Pi Recordings

Dan Weiss began his professional drumming career touring with the likes of saxophonists David Binney, Lee Konitz, Rudresh Mahantthapa, among others. Weiss has also been studying tabla with Pandit Samir Chatterjee for two decades and has been named a top drummer in a number of prominent polls. Sixteen: Drummers Suite bears more than a passing resemblance to Weiss' Fourteen (Pi Recordings, 2014) at least in terms of the music's development and the cohort of musicians.

“The Piano has been an instrument that has woven its way in and out of my life since I was a child. I grew up listening to great classical and jazz players, prepared piano and electronic experiments, extended techniques and later the incredible works of Boulez, Stockhausen, Cage, Ligeti, Ferrari, Feldman, Xenakis and Scelsi. I had written for and worked with many great pianists and created ensemble works with piano and electronics where I was given the freedom to write complex pieces for gifted musicians and technical masters.

A pupil of Yehudi Menuhin plays 15 pieces by 15 composers in 20th century as a Tribute to the mentor. Although the order of tracks could have been a bit better organised, the recording will allow us to reconfirm that contemporary music does not stand for being ostentatious.

A composition Shaw wrote for Sō Percussion in 2012, Taxidermy, also is on the album.

If anything can be proven by listening to these Cds, it is that Rădulescu's music defies categorization. His music eludes what has unfortunately become the didactic and academic Spectralism that has taken a stranglehold in Parisian intellectual circles these days; instead he has developed massive textural sonorities – not reminescent of Ligeti or Xenakis – that recall Byzantine and Hindu music, or music he believes to be ancient and closer to the original harmonic overtone spectrum.

Pianist Georges Pludermacher is recognized for his wide repertory, having emphasized adventurous contemporary works at a time when that was uncommon. He is equally active as a solo pianist, a performer of concertos, and a chamber music player. Pludermacher was born on July 26, 1944, in Guéret, in occupied France. He took up the piano at three, and at 11, he enrolled at the Paris Conservatory. In the summers, he took courses with Géza Anda in Lucerne, Switzerland, and when he completed his studies at the Conservatory at 19, he took the school's first prizes in piano, chamber music, and accompaniment. His career has incorporated all three of these specialties.

As is well known, the Third Reich drove many of its gifted composers into exile, to early deaths or to the concentration camps. But a significant responsibility devolved on another group, who became ‘internal exiles’, remaining in Germany, but refusing to become cultural ornaments of the Nazi regime. Karl Amadeus Hartmann (1905–1963), in Bavaria, consistently kept the spirit of modernism and human commitment alive in his own work.
