This second installment from an electrifying concert should thrill Taylor fans and win a few converts. It defies odds that the pianist, after so many years, continues to astound with his totally original performances. This one is vintage Taylor, with the pianist in full throttle, winding and turning phrases with characteristic brilliance…

Recorded in 1989, Is That You? is very much a studio session, making ample use of overdubs and Bill Frisell's highly selective doubling on bass, banjo, ukulele, and clarinet, as well as his usual guitars. Producer Wayne Horvitz adds keyboards and some drum programming, with Joey Baron playing drums and Dave Hofstra appearing occasionally on tuba and electric bass.

It’s a cold, rainy Saturday night in Spanish Harlem in November 2017, but inside Camaradas El Barrio the scene is a fuego! The wine is flowing, the mofongo is tasting good and Fernando García’s sextet is percolating on the bandstand with a fiery abandon that is palpable to the crowd. As they launch into a wild, whirlwind descarga take on the Duke Ellington-Juan Tizol classic “Caravan,” García fuels the clave with his left foot on the cowbell while traversing the kit with polyrhythmic aplomb as pianist Gabriel Chakarji lays down an entrancing montuno.

On their fourth album, California surf-rock band La Luz chill out a bit. There's little of the needling, propulsive dance music that have inspired audiences to stage dive and crowd surf. Sure, you could still do that to songs like "Metal Man," with its spaced-out Jetsons synth and hip-shaking bells, but you don't necessarily want to be aloft when the slow-dredge chorus rolls in. With its throbbing bass, haunted-house keyboards and jangling tambourine, "The Pines" might be the band's most "dance-y" song on this record.

Celebrated pianist Aruán Ortiz, known for his work with Esperanze Spalding, Greg Osby, Andrew Cyrille and Terri Lyne Carringto, presents "Cub(an)ism", a solo piano recording that brings together a range of musical idioms from and experiences of Cuba, Spain, France and the USA which have formed Ortiz’s eclectic playing style. These original compositions highlight the pianist’s sensuality and creativity as he moves from heady structure to improvisational surprise.

Recorded by the band in 1969, this was a frantic year for the Bonzos, and the album shows the lads going in several directions, but still with many strong numbers and the Bonzos trademark brand of whimsy (such as "Mr. Slater's Parrot", "Sport", and the Rhinocentric "We Were Wrong.") I was delighted to learn from the liner notes that the "hexachloraphine" referred to in "Keynsham" is the red stripe in a well-known brand of toothpaste. There are no coincidences, but sometimes the pattern *is* more obvious.
