Jeff Beal is an American composer of music for film, media, and the concert hall. With musical beginnings as a jazz trumpeter and recording artist, his works are infused with an understanding of rhythm and spontaneity. Steven Schneider for the New York Times wrote of "the richness of Beal's musical thinking…his compositions often capture the liveliness and unpredictability of the best improvisation.” Beal’s seven solo CDs, including Three Graces, Contemplations (Triloka) Red Shift (Koch Jazz), and Liberation (Island Records) established him as a respected recording artist and composer.

On their fourth album, California surf-rock band La Luz chill out a bit. There's little of the needling, propulsive dance music that have inspired audiences to stage dive and crowd surf. Sure, you could still do that to songs like "Metal Man," with its spaced-out Jetsons synth and hip-shaking bells, but you don't necessarily want to be aloft when the slow-dredge chorus rolls in. With its throbbing bass, haunted-house keyboards and jangling tambourine, "The Pines" might be the band's most "dance-y" song on this record.

Recorded by the band in 1969, this was a frantic year for the Bonzos, and the album shows the lads going in several directions, but still with many strong numbers and the Bonzos trademark brand of whimsy (such as "Mr. Slater's Parrot", "Sport", and the Rhinocentric "We Were Wrong.") I was delighted to learn from the liner notes that the "hexachloraphine" referred to in "Keynsham" is the red stripe in a well-known brand of toothpaste. There are no coincidences, but sometimes the pattern *is* more obvious.
