Zhu Shirui's 12 Questions on 'Heavenward Questions' is a virtuoso concerto for Dizi (bamboo transverse flute) and large orchestra derives its name from a title of a poem by the ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan (343-285 BC). Zhu's highly colorful score is a perfect fusion of ethnic melodic inspirations, vigorous rhythms (performed by a large compliment of Chinese percussion instruments) and a well-developed modernist aesthetic. Lasting just under 18 minutes, '12 Questions…' never overstays its welcome; indeed, you are left eager for more!

Zhu is exceptional among Chinese composers of his generation for his remarkable capacity to adapt himself to the changing political climate. After his studies in Moscow his brazenly Romantic music was criticized in China for its revisionist spirit and he stopped composing for a while. In the late 1960s he was swept along by the revolutionary ardour of the Maoists and began to compose choral cantatas on texts of Mao Zedong. By the end of the Cultural Revolution he had lost faith in his political music and in himself, but in the 1980s he embarked on an astonishing second career as an orchestral composer of in contemporary and even experimental inclination.

It is with children in mind that I recorded these French Suites, always having heartfelt simplicity and purity in their mind. Children see the world with hope, optimism, and cast in light much like Miró sees the world. I find a childlike purity in him, similar to what I hear in the French Suites. There is a quote by Miró that touches me enormously and makes me think a lot whenever I play, as it reflects something that may be the most difficult aspect of musical interpretation and of art in general: 'To gain freedom is to gain simplicity' - Zhu Xiao-Mei.

The ‘Prelude’ here is again a song arrangement – ‘Songs my mother taught me’, in which ( joined by the pianist Juho Pohjonen) Vogler pours out smooth, warm tone with unindulgent restraint…The focus, however, is on two of Dvořák’s great chamber works, in performances that conjure up the spirit of the Moritzburg Festival, where Vogler is director.
