A compulsory exercise in the careers of the greatest, instrumentals, together with brilliant improvisations based on catchy themes, have always had pride of place in rock history. This anthology retraces the different facets of their roots and evolution, from jazz and country music to the kind of rock where electric guitars play a central role. From boogie woogie to western swing, and from rhythm and blues to soul music, radio jingles, film music and surf-rock, the earliest instrumental rock classics are compiled here with the detailed comments of Bruno Blum, himself a guitarist and rockspecialist.

This is a pretty cool compilation of instrumentals from the '70s. 12 of the 18 songs here were Top Ten hits, with the rest being minor hits. The title says "rock" instrumentals, but only a few of the songs are actually rock. There is more funk and disco than rock here. One of the odder trends of the '70s was dance/pop versions of classical instrumetals, and this CD has three examples of that.

Ace Records is well known as the home of the Fireballs, the timeless instrumental combo that legendary producer Norman Petty shepherded to the top of the charts in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Their success inspired a generation of instrumental combos, several of whom beat a path to Petty’s door. Of these, only the String-A-Longs made any chart headway, but given a predilection for cute melodies and “beautiful music” – not to mention his own record successes with the Norman Petty Trio – instrumentals would always have great appeal to the producer.

Vol. 3 in acclaimed instrumental series finds Duane Eddy and his guitar Moovin' 'N' Groovin' and the Phil Upchurch Combo steppin' to the dancefloor with their fantastic, double-sided single You Can't Sit Down (Parts 1 & 2) (incidentally, this has, for its time - 1961, a floor-shaking, rootsy bass-guitar solo that predicts the later stylings of bassists like Willie Weeks). Here are UK Pop chart hits Perfidia by The Ventures (#4), Wipe Out by The Surfaris (#5), (Ghost) Riders In The Sky by The Ramrods (#8), Pipeline by The Chantays (#16), Quite A Party by The Fireballs (#29) and the afore-mentioned You Can't Sit Down (#39). Lesser known items by The Teen Beats (The Slop Beat) and Buddy Lucas (I Want To Know) help present a more complete picture of these instrumental years from the late 1950s to early 1960s (but are also included because they are so damn good!). The detailed sleevenotes are by Stuart Colman.

On paper, Elton John‘s rollicking Wonderful Crazy Night sounds like it should have been a blockbuster. The album presents as an emotional bookend to 2013’s more meditative The Diving Board, and continues his later-period collaboration with producer T Bone Burnett that stretches back to 2010’s The Union with Leon Russell. Even the appearance of classic-era band members Davey Johnstone and Nigel Olsson, here for the first time since 2006’s retro-focused The Captain and the Kid, can’t completely save the uneven Wonderful Crazy Night. They help make “In the Name of You” into a swaggering outburst and give a Beatles-meets-Muscle Shoals feel to “A Good Heart,” only to get tangled up in the strangely maudlin “Claw Hammer” and the overly chirpy “Guilty Pleasure.”

Rhino closes its five-volume rock instrumentals series with an 18-track outing devoted to surf guitar. This fast-paced, prickly, and frequently exciting form may not be among the most diversified structurally, but if does offer some surging playing from its practitioners. They range from founding father Dick Dale to its most popular bands, the Surfaris, Belairs, Ventures, and Chantays. While not particularly a hardcore surf collection, this disc certainly outlines its virtues, and the tunes were long enough to display guitar proficiency, but short enough to prevent self-indulgence and repetition.

Instrumental Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Early Pop/Rock

The most consistently enticing disc in the Rock Instrumental Classics series, this is both a great party and driving record and a window on the rhythms that powered soul music in the '60s (and early '70s, in two cases). In addition to some obvious choices (the four Booker T. & the MG's tracks, the Mar-Keys' "Last Night"), it also offers some left-field picks, such as the varied approaches to Latin music offered by Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria, and El Chicano. The stock of virtuoso performances here is all but endless: the bass-and-drums breakdown on Cliff Nobles and Co.'s "The Horse," the glinting guitar solo on the Bar-Kays' "Soul Finger," Hugh Masekela's questing trumpet on "Grazing in the Grass".

The four-disc set Surf-Age Nuggets: Trash & Twang Instrumentals 1959-1966 plays like the flip side to Rhino's classic surf music box set Cowabunga!, and for good reason: that set's co-producer, James Austin, helmed this project, and his passion and encyclopedic knowledge of surf music from its greats to its most obscure acts is a big part of what makes this collection such a thrill. Where Cowabunga! concentrated on surf's stars, Surf-Age Nuggets digs deep; for every song by Dick Dale, there are many more by lesser-known but just as devoted acts such as the Ramrods, the Telstars, the Mosriters, and the Elite U.F.O. (!).
