The violinist and composer Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644–1704) was a celebrated Kapellmeister at the court of Archbishop Max Gandolph of Salzburg. Present-day audiences tend to think of him first and foremost as the author of anthologies of spectacular violin music such as his Rosary Sonatas of around 1670 and his Sonatas for solo violin of 1681. But attitudes to these works were initially devastatingly dismissive. In 1927, the eighth – posthumous – edition of Wilhelm Joseph von Wasielewski’s seminal Die Violine und ihre Meister appeared with revisions by the author’s son, Waldemar, and assured its readers that only “some” of these pieces were of “lasting musical merit”.

Olivier Greif was an outstanding composer and pianist who died before his time. His complex, charismatic personality made an impression on every artist who encountered him. A keen duty of remembrance has animated them ever since, now relayed by a young generation who have been captivated by his vibrant, tragic and yet radiant music. Olivier Greif was born in Paris on the 3 rd of January, 1950, to Jewish, Polish émigré parents. (His father, a pianist, and survivor of Auschwitz, became a neuropsychiatrist.) Olivier entered the Paris Conservatoire at the age of ten. At the age of seventeen, he obtained his first prize for composition in Tony Aubin’s class, then going on to hone his skills in New York with Luciano Berio. From the age of eleven until he was thirty-one, he composed highly individualistic works (including Chants de l’Âme in 1979), outside current trends.
This fantastic album has been released in early 1970 on French BYG Actuel label (home of Gong, Alan Jack Civilisation and Freedom) and at the time it was one of the earliest French rock albums! Catalyse LP consisted a powerful collection of largely instrumental and improvised progressive music with strong psychedelic and jazz infuences, where electric guitars and flute parts were backed by very busy rhythm section and David Allen-like vocals. The music of Ame Son often sounded like a combination of early Gong, late 60 ‘s Pink Floyd, Group 1850 and even Jethro Tull. In addition 5 rare tracks (from 1969 to 1971) have been added - including rare, non-LP single.
Insubmersible Daniel Darc.
